Plunkett, Whitehead Each Net 17 in DSC Win

Red Storm defeat Whittier College in exhibition play

ST. GEORGE, UTAH (November 5) – Seniors Donovan Plunkett (Oroville, CA/Las Plumas) and Tom Whitehead (St. George, UT/Dixie) each scored 17 points for Dixie State College in Friday night's 87-59 exhibition win over Whittier College.

The Red Storm (1-1 EXH) scored the game's first 10 points and cruised to a 42-17 halftime advantage. Whittier surged back in the early portions of the second half – cutting the DSC lead to 15 with 13:45 left. Sparked by a trio of triples from McKay Massey (Payson, UT/Payson), Kacen Smith (Saint George, UT/Dixie) and Plunkett, the Storm responded with a 10-0 run to put the game out of reach.

Whitehead went 6-of-12 from the floor with five three-pointers while Plunkett finished 6-of-11. Griffon Jones (Cheney, WA/Cheney), making his exhibition debut, impressed in the post posting a nine point, nine-rebound game. Two other post players, Everton Araujo (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Torquato Caleiro) (nine points, two rebounds) and Solomon Jensen (Centerville, UT/Viewmont) (seven points, eight boards), contributed solid efforts.

Greg Preer of the Poets led all scorers with 26 points – 24 coming in the second half. Willie Mebane had 10 points and seven boards in 30 minutes.

Dixie State outshot the Poets from the field 47.4-to-36.2 percent and bested the battle of the boards 50-27.

The Red Storm play their final exhibition contest on Monday night against Carroll College at 7:30pm inside the Burns Arena.
