ST GEORGE, UTAH – The Red Storm women’s soccer team kept their Pacific West Conference record unblemished Thursday afternoon defeating the visiting Chaminade Silverswords 7-0 at Hansen Stadium.
Dixie State (5-3, 4-0) controlled the tempo and held the ball in their possession for the majority of the match. The Storm dominated the shot count 40-3 putting pressure on the defense of Chaminade (0-7, 0-4)
DSC tallied five goals within a span of eight minutes early in the first half.
Shannon Larsen (Salt Lake City. UT/Skyline HS '06) scored top shelf off a right side assist from
Erin Beeston (Edmond, OK/Edmond North) in the 13th minute.
Wendy Stratford (Layton, UT/Layton) made the score 2-0 going high off a breakaway at the 15:36 mark.
Larsen got her second goal 44 seconds later heading a shot into goal after the goalkeeper could not handle a crossing pass from
Robyn Wall (Bountiful. UT/Bountiful HS '06).
Mikala Wilkes (Cedar Hills. UT/Lone Peak HS '06), current conference player of the week, pushed the lead to four goals scoring unassisted in the 19th minute.
Jessica Michie (Purcellville, VA/Louden Valley) closed out the first half with a pair of goals. In the 21st minute, Michie guided a shot left side into the net concluding a successful two-on-one breakaway with Beeston. With seconds left before the half,
Dacee Stephens (Hyde Park, UT/Sky View) centered a pass for Michie who scored left side.
Dixie State played solid defense in the second half to keep the Silverswords off the board and added an insurance goal in the 65th minute when Stratford kicked one in from the left side after assists from Beeston and Camille Peterson.
Goalkeepers
Tonya Smith (Eagle Mountain. UT/Lehi) and Abby Monroe faced only three shots with one coming on goal to preserve the shutout.
Beeston led the way with three points (3A) while Larsen and Michie each added two-point days (2G each).
The Red Storm returns to the pitch Saturday night for a conference battle against the Vulcans of the University of Hawaii-Hilo. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm at Hansen Stadium.
