Roylance Hat Trick Caps Red Storm Win in Double OT

Dixie State men's soccer overcomes two goal BYU-Hawaii lead

LAIE, HAWAII – Leading into the current Hawaiian road trip, head coach Danny Ortiz was concerned with one facet of his Dixie State offense – scoring goals. Tuesday night on the north shore of Oahu, DSC rode the golden foot of leading goal scorer Jordan Roylance (Smithfield, UT/Sky View) to a 3-2 double overtime match win over the host Seasiders of BYU-Hawaii.

After a scoreless first half, Roylance led Dixie State (5-6-1, 3-5) back from a two-goal deficit to record his second hat trick of the season. His first goal came in the 70th minute when Francisco Arellano (Ogden, UT/Pine View) found Roylance in the middle and he pushed a shot past the keeper. The match equalizer came with under two minutes left in regulation when Roylance received a crossing pass from Kevin Young (Salt Lake City. UT/Kearns),  followed a blocked shot and deposited the rebound for his 10th goal of the year.

Zac Hales (Saint George, UT/Dixie) assisted on the game-winner in the 107th minute of double overtime pushing the ball up the left side and passing the ball right to Roylance's foot. The freshman then bent his shot past Seasisder goal keeper Cory Cosgrove.

Hales and Zhaque Budge (Bountiful. UT/Bountiful) both had chances to win the match in OT. Hales try sailed high and Budge missed a penalty kick three minutes into the second OT.

BYU-Hawaii (4-7-1, 3-4-1) had their two goals from Sam Akinaka (58th min.) and Jared Trussell (63rd min.). Tyler McAninch (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) made six saves in playing all 107 minutes in goal.

Coach Ortiz was pleased with the DSC effort. “The guys played well from start to finish. I knew we had controlled the game from the start… once we got into OT, they guys came off the field knowing they were going to win. That attitude is what we have been missing all year.” He credits the midfield play of Parker Kennah (Layton, UT/Northridge), Josh Hernandez (Kaysville, UT/Davis) and Jose Rodriguez (Cheyenne, WY/Rock Springs) doing an outstading job of controlling the pace of the match.

The Red Storm looks to remain unbeaten on their Hawaiian road trip on Thursday against Hawaii Pacific University. The match in Honolulu is scheduled to begin at 3:30 local time.
