Utah Tech saw its WAC winless streak reach five-straight after Trailblazers were blanked at UT Arlington, 2-0, in the first game of a weekend conference road series on Friday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Â
Senior righthander
Tyler Ray (L, 4-6) put together his best overall outing of the season, tying a career high with seven strikeouts and limiting UTA (17-27/6-7 WAC) to only four hits over seven strong innings.Â
Â
Unfortunately the senior's lone blemish on the scoreboard came in the Mavericks' fifth inning when Zach Mazoch led off the frame with a hard luck inside-the-park home run. UT Arlington would later take advantage of a Blazer error to plate a two-out unearned run.
Â
Meanwhile Ray's counterpart, righthander Caylon Dygert (W, 5-4) was just as dominant, limiting Utah Tech (29-20/6-7 WAC) to three total hits over seven shutout innings.
Â
Despite their offensive woes, the Trailblazers still had a chance to tie or take the lead in the ninth after
Cooper Smith drew and lead off walk and
Hudson Manwaring was plunked two pitches later.
Â
However Maverick closer Hayes Melville (S, 5) would retire the next three Blazers he faced to escape the jam and end the game.Â
Â
Utah Tech finished with just those three hits, all singles, while the Trailblazers stranded 10 runners on base paths on the night. Manwaring accounted for two of the three Blazer safeties to lead the offense.
Â
Friday night's loss also spoiled Utah Tech's 1000
th NCAA-era game (559-440-1).
Â
The two teams will play the middle game of their three-game set on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1:05 p.m. (MT).
