Thanks to his record-setting performance earlier this week, Utah Tech freshman
David Liechty was named Western Athletic Conference Men's Golf Player of the Week, and
Tuesday Birdies Mid-Major Player of the Week on Thursday.
Liechty (6-0; Layton, Utah/Layton HS) picked up his second individual tournament victory of the season, doing so record fashion at the Seattle U Redhawk Invitational, which wrapped up play this past Tuesday at Chambers Bay Golf Course.
With the victory, Liechty became the first Utah Tech men's golfer to win medalist honors twice in a single season during the program's brief NCAA Division I era. The Trailblazer freshman also became the fourth player in the program's four-year era overall to win at least two individual season events.
Former Blazer standout Kenny You won three tournaments during the 2014-15 spring season, while the duo Jayce Frampton (fall) and Nicklaus Britt (spring) both won two tournaments in the 2017-18 campaign.
After opening the 54-hole event with a 2-under 70 on his Monday morning loop, Liechty rolled in seven birdies and an eagle on his way to a career collegiate low 8-under 64 and a six-shot lead after 36 holes.
Liechty's 64 was second-lowest individual 18-hole score record in Utah Tech's NCAA era, while his two-round total of minus-10 134 tied the school's 36-hole scoring record that Britt posted twice in 2017 and 2019.
Liechty then went out on final loop on Tuesday and fired a 6-under 66 with another eagle and five more birdies to finish with a 54-hole total of minus-16 200.
The freshman's three-round total of 200 also tied the program's 54-hole scoring record, which Britt shot on his way to winning the 2019 RMAC conference individual title.
Utah Tech will close out the 2025-26 regular season with an appearance at the UC Santa Barbara Gaucho Invitational, which will be played next Monday and Tuesday, at Sandpiper Golf Club in Goleta, Calif.
