Utah Tech dropped its fourth-straight game in heartbreaking fashion after the Trailblazers were walked off at Santa Clara, 5-4 in 10 innings, on Sunday afternoon at Stephen C. Schott Stadium.
Â
After being held to just two runs and six total hits through the first two games of the series, the Trailblazers (13-7) wasted little time getting the offense back on track.
Â
In fact it took only one pitch, when Blazer lead-off hitter
Kyle McDaniel ambushed the very first pitch of the game from SCU starter Jackson Cook and sent it over the right field wall to give Utah Tech its first lead of the weekend.
Â
Then with one out in the inning,
Ryan Kroepel golfed his team-leading fourth homer of the season in nearly the same spot over the right field wall as McDaniel's shot.
Â
Miller Durham followed suit two batters later with his third home run of the year, and Utah Tech's third solo blast of the frame, that sailed well over the wall in straight-away center field to spot the Blazers with a 3-0 first inning advantage.
Â
Utah Tech extended to a 4-0 lead in the second thanks to a two-out
Kace Naone single that chased home
Ty Johnsen, who singled to lead-off the inning.
Â
The early run support bolstered a strong start from junior righthander
Brandon Kosel (ND), who struck out five and limited SCU to only one hit and two total base runners over his first five innings of work.Â
Â
Santa Clara (9-9) managed to break through in the sixth with three two-out runs to trim the Trailblazer lead to 4-3. Kosel was lifted with two runners on base and two gone in the stanza, and the Broncos struck for consecutive hits, including a two-run Tate Medicoff double.Â
Â
Utah Tech carried its slim one-run lead through to the ninth inning and was one out away from victory. However Santa Clara would again string together a pair of two-out hits, with pinch-hitter Hunter Fujimoto coming through with an RBI-single to right field to tie the game at 4-4.
Â
The Broncos then clinched the three-game series sweep in the 10
th on a bases-loaded Waylon Walsh run-scoring sacrifice fly out.
Â
All nine Trailblazers in the starting line-up reached base safely, seven of whom did so with base hits, with McDaniel and Durham leading the way with two hits apiece as Utah Tech outhit SCU 9-7.Â
Â
Kosel's five strikeouts were a career high for the junior, who allowed just the one hit and two runs over 5.2 innings, though he did not figure in the decision. Â
Â
Utah Tech returns home to host in-state rival BYU on St. Patrick's Day, Tuesday, March 17. First pitch at Bruce Hurst Field is slated for 6:05 p.m. (MT).
