Utah Tech's offensive woes continued as the Trailblazers were turned away in the middle game of their three-game weekend road series at Santa Clara, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at Stephen C. Schott Stadium.
Â
The two sides were locked in an old fashioned pitchers' duel through the first four innings. Senior righthander
Dakoda West got off to a great start, striking out three while surrendering only two hits.
Â
Meanwhile his Bronco counterpart, righthander Jace Gillmore fanned three and limited the Trailblazers to only one hit, and faced one batter over the minimum.Â
Â
Santa Clara (8-9) ultimately drew first blood, doing so in the Bronco fifth, when Tate Medicoff doubled off the wall in center field to chase home Luke Devine from first base carrying the game's first run.Â
Â
Trailing 2-0 in the seventh, Utah Tech (13-6) finally got on the scoreboard when with a runner on second and two outs,
Gavin Long reached on an infield single. The throw to the first base bag on the play wound up going into foul territory, which allowed
Miller Durham to score and cut the deficit in half.Â
Â
Santa Clara managed to get that run back after the stretch, then turned away Utah Tech in the eighth when the Blazers had two runners on and the go-ahead run at the plate with one out.Â
Â
The Broncos added an insurance in the eighth, and SCU closer Hunter Hargett (S, 2) pitched a scoreless ninth to send Utah Tech to its third-straight loss.Â
Â
Utah Tech wound with four hits on the day, all singles, as
Finnegan Stewart,
Andrew Pyle and Petey Soto all joined Long in the hit column. West (L, 2-2) pitched into the sixth inning and scattered two runs on six hits to go with those three strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. Â
Â
Utah Tech will look to salvage one game from Santa Clara and avoid a sweep in the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m. (MT).
