Trailblazers Upended at Utah Valley on Thursday Night

Despite a combined 34 points from Brie Crittendon and Kaylee Borden, Utah Tech came out on the short end of an Old Hammer Rivalry thriller at Utah Valley, 58-55, on Thursday night inside Lockhart Arena.

How it happened
The Trailblazers (6-16/1-11 WAC) found themselves deadlocked in a 33-33 tie after the opening 20 minutes. Utah Tech knocked down seven 3-pointers (7-of-17), as part of an overall solid shooting effort (12-of-26; .462), which helped offset 11 first half turnovers.

Crittendon had it going early as she went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, while Calyn Dallas drained a pair of treys of her own off the bench.

The game see-sawed back and forth throughout the third quarter until the Blazers put together an 8-1 run to extend to a 48-43 lead after two Crittendon free throws with 1:27 left in the period.

Borden had the hot hand for Utah Tech to start the second half, accounting for the Blazers' first seven points.

But it was Crittendon who got the run going with her fourth 3-pointer of the night, while Lauren Crocker knocked down a trifecta of her own from the corner to beat the shot clock at the 2:39 mark.

Meanwhile the Utah Tech defense limited UVU (11-12/4-8 WAC) to just 1-of-13 from the floor in the frame. However the Wolverines managed to keep pace by going 11-of-13 at the foul line, which allowed them to trim the Blazer lead to 48-46 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Trailblazers would again lead by five at 53-48 after a Paige Cofer 3-pointer and a Crittendon bucket with 6:38 to go.

UVU chipped away at the deficit and ultimately wrestled the lead away with two Amanda Barcello free throws, which spotted the Wolverines with a 56-55 advantage with 45.3 seconds on the clock.

Utah Tech turned the ball over on its ensuing possession, but Crocker stole the ball back with 23 seconds to set the Blazers up with a chance to win the game.

Unfortunately it was not meant to be as Utah Tech was called for a tough offensive foul on a drive in the lane with 4.1 remaining.

UVU forward Kaylee Headrick then put her side up three with a lay-in with two seconds on the clock. Borden had a chance to tie the game with a three-quarter court heave at the buzzer, but the shot caromed away.

Numbers to know
Crittendon led all scorers with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting with a season-high tying four 3-pointers. The redshirt senior also pulled down eight rebounds and picked off two steals.

Meanwhile Borden poured in 16 points with a pair of threes of her own to go with two assists.

Utah Tech wound up shooting 38.0 percent (19-of-50) from the floor, which included a season-high tying 11 3-pointers (11-of-33; .333). The Trailblazers also outrebounded UVU by a 35-32 count, thanks to a career-high 15 boards from Crocker.

Headrick led four Wolverines in double figures with 14 points. UVU hit on 15-of-48 (.313) from the floor, and went 25-of-27 (.926) at the foul line, while Utah Tech went to the charity stripe just nine times overall (6-of-9; .667).
