Trailblazers Drop Heartbreaker at Tarleton State on Saturday

Though four Trailblazers scored in double figures, Utah Tech was felled by a late-game scoring drought in a heartbreaking 64-60 road loss at Tarleton State on Saturday afternoon inside the EECU Center.

How it happened
Utah Tech (6-10/1-5 WAC) found itself in an early 11-2 hole five-plus minutes into play after the Blazers misfired on six of their first seven shot attempts.

However the Trailblazers managed to right ship, thanks to some timely 3-point shooting.

Calyn Dallas came off the bench to knock down consecutive perimeter jumpers, while Paige Cofer connected from downtown on Utah Tech's ensuing possession to tie the game at 11-11 with 2:48 to go in the first quarter.

Utah Tech would eventually take its first lead the day at 17-16 with three minutes gone in the second quarter thanks to a pair of Chardonnay Hartley free throws.

The two sides went on to trade baskets the rest of the period before the Texans (9-8/3-3 WAC) retreated to their locker room with a slim 33-31 advantage.

The Trailblazers flipped the script to start the second half, opening the third quarter with a 9-1 run to race out to their biggest lead of the day at 40-34 after a Lauren Crocker 3-pointer at the 6:20 mark.

Utah Tech would see its lead swell to as many seven points before heading to the fourth clinging to a 49-46 cushion.

After a Cofer 3-pointer spotted the Trailblazers a 59-57 lead with 4:27 to go, the Utah Tech offense went the rest of the way with a made field goal.

Meanwhile Tarleton wrestled the lead back with a Caroline Lyles trey at the 2:07 mark, and owned a slim 62-59 advantage following a Tessa Engelman jumper with 59 seconds remaining.

Utah Tech managed to pull to within two after Crocker split two free throws with 37 seconds left, but Engelman answered with a dagger mid-range jumper to beat the shot clock on the Texans next time with the basketball to send the Blazers to their fifth road loss of the season.

Numbers to know
Hartley and Kaylee Borden paced the Trailblazers with 12 points apiece. Hartley also finished with three rebounds and a co-game high five assists, which helped vault her into second place on Utah Tech's career assists list (275).

Borden managed to stuff the stat sheet with three assists of her own to go with a game-high three steals and one board.

Cofer added 10 points thanks to 2-of-5 from the perimeter with six rebounds, while Brie Crittendon chipped in 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers along with four caroms and four assists.

Crocker wound up with six points, a team-high seven rebounds, and a career-high tying four blocked shots, which moved her into 10th place on Utah Tech's single season list (29).

Utah Tech shot 36.5 percent (23-of-63) from the floor with 10 3-pointers (10-of-28; .357). The Trailblazers also went to the foul line a season-low eight times (4-of-8; .500) and turned the ball over a season-low seven times, while turning the Texans over 11 times.

Jakoriah Long led four Texans in double figures with a game-high 17 points, while Shadasia Brackens finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Tarleton State connected on an even 41.0 percent (25-of-61) of its field goal attempts and went 6-of-13 (.462) from beyond the arc. The Texans also outrebounded Utah Tech by a 47-31 count, including a 14-8 edge on the offensive glass.
