Trailblazers Outdueled by CBU on Thursday Night

Utah Tech dropped to 1-6 in Western Athletic Conference play after the Trailblazers were outdueled by conference co-leader California Baptist, 67-61, on Thursday night in the Burns Arena.

How it happened
Utah Tech (6-11) got off to a hot start offensively, knocking down six of its first 11 shots to bolt out to a 14-7 lead after a Kaylee Borden 3-pointer with just under four minutes to play in the first quarter.

Borden, who scored nine of her game-high 23 points in the opening frame, went 4-of-5 from the floor to begin the game.

CBU (12-8/6-1 WAC) answered the early Trailblazer barrage by scoring seven of the next nine points of the quarter, and began the second period with a 12-5 run, to erase the deficit and take a at 26-21 lead with five minutes to play until halftime.

Calyn Dallas stopped the run with three free throws, which kick-started a 12-5 Blazer spurt of their own over the final five minutes of the frame as Utah Tech retreated to the locker room with a slim 33-31 advantage.

The Trailblazers got their perimeter game going to start the second half. Brie Crittendon hit from downtown for Utah Tech's first points of the third quarter, while Borden and Merceius Mili later went back-to-back from beyond the arc, as the Blazers extended to a 42-34 lead at the 5:49 mark of the stanza.

Again the Lancers would counter, thanks in large part to post player Emma Johansson, who poured in seven of her team's next 11 points to help CBU close the gap to 48-45 as the game moved to the fourth.

CBU kept that momentum going through the quarter break as the Lancers used a 14-3 run to open up a 59-51 lead with 5:38 remaining in the game.

Paige Cofer finally ended the run with a lay-in, which was followed by a Lauren Crocker bucket and two Crittendon free throws that pulled Utah Tech to within two at 59-57 with 3:45 to go.

Unfortunately the Blazers could draw no closer as CBU guard Lauren Olsen drained a dagger 3-pointer with 2:20 left. The Lancers held off Utah Tech from there to escape with the road win.

Numbers to know
Borden enjoyed arguably her finest shooting night of the season as she went 9-of-15 from the floor with a career-high five 3-pointers (5-of-9). Borden also tallied six rebounds, two steals and a game-high four assists.

Cofer added 11 points with six rebounds, while Crocker just missed her first collegiate double-double with nine points and a season-high tying nine rebounds.

Utah Tech shot 38.2 percent from the floor (21-of-55), and reached double digits in made 3-pointers for the second-straight game, going 10-of-31 (.323) from the perimeter. The Trailblazers also went 9-of-11 (.818) from the foul line and dished out 15 assists on their 21 made field goals.

Khloe Lemon led the Lancers with 16 points off the bench, while Johansson finished 15 points and Olsen chipped in 14 points.

CBU connected on an even 41.1 percent (23-of-56) of its field goal attempts and went 6-of-18 (.333) from beyond the arc. The Lancers also outrebounded Utah Tech by a 38-32 count, and recorded 12 steals on 21 Blazers turnovers.
