Despite a game-high 23 points from
Kaylee Borden, Utah Tech came out on the wrong end of a hard-fought 64-56 road loss at UT Arlington on Thursday night inside the College Park Center.
How it happened
Utah Tech (6-9/1-4 WAC) led 19-18 after the opening 10 minutes thanks to a solid start offensively. Six different Trailblazers found their way into the scoring column, while Utah Tech shot an even 50 percent from both the floor (7-of-14) and from 3-point (3-of-6) country.
UT Arlington (7-10/1-4 WAC) got off to a fast start to begin the second quarter, outscoring the Blazers 9-2 to open up a 27-21 lead with 7:27 to play until halftime.
Borden stopped the run with a jumper, and accounted for eight of Utah Tech's 10 points in the frame as the Blazers pulled to within two at 31-29.
However a turnover on the Trailblazers' final possession of the half led to a Kira Reynolds running jumper just the before the halftime horn spotted the Lady Mavs with a 33-29 advantage at the intermission.
UT Arlington kept Utah Tech at bay throughout the second half, and would lead by as many as nine points at 50-41 after a Mila Reynolds 3-pointer with 2:14 left in the third quarter.
Borden answered the Reynolds trifecta with one of her own nearly a minute later, while
Andjela Colic split a pair of free throws as the Trailblazers headed to the fourth down five at 50-45.
Brie Crittendon then opened the final stanza with a lay-in that drew Utah Tech to within three at 50-47.
That would be as close as the Blazers would get as the Lady Mavs answered every Utah Tech challenge and would come away with their first WAC conference win of the season.
Numbers to know
Borden's 23 points were two off of her career high of 25 she set twice in November. The redshirt senior guard went 10-of-16 from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers, and led the Blazers with six rebounds and four assists.
Crittendon and
Paige Cofer both chipped in seven points apiece, while
Chardonnay Hartley added six points with three assists.
Utah Tech wound up shooting 41.7 percent (20-of-48) from the floor, which included a 6-of-20 (.300) clip from the perimeter. The Trailblazers also went 10-of-16 (.667) at the foul line, and outrebounded UT Arlington by a 33-29 count.
Unfortunately, the Trailblazers were done in by 24 turnovers, which led to 24 Lady Mav points.
Reynolds paced UT Arlington with 17 points, 12 of which came in the second half, while Alexsyah Gouduea finished with 10 points and six boards.
UTA connected on 43.6 percent (24-of-55) of its field goal attempts and went 7-of-17 (.412) from beyond the arc.
