Trailblazers Outlast Southern Utah, 2-1, in WAC Opener

(Cedar City, Utah - Sept. 28, 2025) – Behind two first-half goals, Utah Tech women's soccer outlasted Southern Utah, 2-1, in its WAC opener on Sunday afternoon at Thunderbird Soccer Field. The Trailblazers extended their all-time series lead to 4-0-2 to remain undefeated against rival SUU with the victory.

Redshirt sophomore Lataya Brost tallied the first two shots on goal for Utah Tech (5-3-2, 1-0-0 WAC). SUU redshirt senior goalkeeper Jazmyn Brass made both saves in the 4th and 12th minutes.

Southern Utah (1-6-2, 0-1-0 WAC) had its first scoring opportunity in the 10th minute. T-Bird freshman forward Sicily Clark hit the left post on a long-range shot, and the Trailblazers were able to make a clear.

Senior midfielder Kyah Le put the Trailblazers up 1-0 in the 17th minute. Le corralled a loose ball in the attacking third and launched a right-footed shot from distance that dipped just under the crossbar and into the back of the net. It was Le's third goal of the season.  The Thunderbirds managed their first shot on goal in the 32nd minute. SUU redshirt senior forward Whitney Gardner put one toward the left post, and UT senior GK Brianna Frey made the save.

The Trailblazers extended their lead to 2-0 courtesy of freshman forward Jocelyn Wright in the 37th minute. Freshman defender Abby Olsen threw in the ball to sophomore midfielder Bre Koscielski, who played it back to Wright. She blasted a shot toward the bottom left corner, and the ball skipped off Brass and into the goal. It was Wright's third goal of the season, leading all WAC freshmen.  Brass made her final save of the contest in the 44th minute, denying Koscielski's shot off a UT corner kick.

SUU came out of the break strong, scoring on a counterattack in the 47th minute. Gardner played a through ball in front of junior forward Kayleigh Acree. Frey made an initial challenge, stopping Acree's initial advance at the top of the box, but Acree recovered and scored on a right-footed shot.

Frey made saves on shots by Acree and Gardner in the 52nd and 56th minutes, respectively.

Off an SUU free kick on the 84th minute, Frey protected her left post on a header by T-Bird sophomore defender Brooklyn Bradley. Frey finished her outing with four saves.

Wright centered a ball for Koscielski, who just got under the shot, sending it over the crossbar in the 85th minute.

Senior Lacy Fox nearly curled a right-footed shot into the right side of the net, but it went just wide in the 87th minute.

Both teams totaled nine shots with five on goal. Utah Tech was tabbed with all five offside calls.

The Trailblazers next face Abilene Christian on Thursday, Oct. 2, in Abilene, Texas. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. (MT) at Elmer Gray Stadium.
