(Los Angeles, Calif. - Sept. 15, 2025) – Utah Tech men's soccer was beaten by Loyola Marymount, 1-0, on Monday evening at Sullivan Field. The Trailblazers stymied a potent LMU offense, which had scored nine goals in its previous match, for over two-thirds of the match, but couldn't keep the Lions off the board.
In his first career start, Utah Tech (1-3-3, 0-0-0 WAC) freshman goalkeeper
Luca Campoli made a save at his left post on a shot by LMU (4-2-1, 0-0-0 WCC) freshman midfielder Greyson Moreno in the sixth minute.
Lion junior defender Nathan Rodrigues skied a free kick over the goal after LMU drew a foul near the top of the box in the 11th minute.
Freshman midfielder
Jacob Cinelli put the Trailblazers' first shot on frame in the 26th minute. From a throw-in, Cinelli got the ball in the box and took a shot toward the left of the goal, but Lion junior GK Philip Hovers protected his near post.Â
In the 33rd minute, sophomore midfielder
Dunes Nielsen stole the ball in the attacking third and dribbled into the box, blasting a shot on the right side of the net. Hovers made his second save on the sharp shot.Â
Junior forward
Samir Cuevas tried a long shot in the closing minute of the first half. Hover stopped the zipping, low attempt at goal for his third save.
In a dangerous run of play, junior midfielder
Landon Huebner blocked a shot at the top of the box by Lion freshman forward Anthony Boyadjian. LMU freshman forward Jaxson Hutcheon found the loose ball and fired it into the left post. Afterwards, the Trailblazers were able to make a clear.Â
Huebner descended on a loose ball above the box in the 68th minute and blasted a shot just a little too left, hitting the post.Â
The Lions scored in the 69th minute on a chaotic play. The Trailblazers blocked an initial shot at the top of the box, and then Campoli laid out in front of a shot by graduate forward Diego Lopez-Rosales. From that save, LMU junior midfielder Quinn Galvin sent in a third shot, which found the back of the net to give Loyola Marymount a 1-0 lead.Â
Sophomore forward
Taylor Rogers put an off-balance shot on frame in the 74th minute from a UT cross. Hover protected his near post.Â
Rogers tried to curl in a right-footed shot in the 79th minute, but Hover was able to reach up and stop it.Â
Hover denied Rogers a third time in the 86th minute. Rogers beat two defenders and fired a shot to the top left of the net, but the Lion GK was able to get his gloves on it.
Cuevas got off Utah Tech's final shot in the 89th minute. With his back to the goal and a Lion all over him, Cuevas pivoted and scissor-kicked the ball over the crossbar.
LMU outshot UT, 9-8, but the Trailblazers held a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Lions were caught offside five times to Utah Tech's one offense. The foul count was close, with UT having three more, 13-10.Â
The Trailblazers wrap up their Golden State trip at Cal Poly on Thursday, Sept. 18, in San Luis Obispo, California. Kickoff at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium is set for 8 p.m. (MT).
