Utah Tech dropped its third-straight decision to a ranked Big Sky Conference opponent after No. 10/8 Idaho handed the Trailblazers a 20-6 road loss on Saturday afternoon at the P1FCU Kibbie Dome.
Utah Tech (0-3/0-0 UAC) trailed 10-3 at the halftime break despite only having the football on offense for less than nine total minutes while being held to 93 yards of total offense.
Â
After a scoreless first quarter, Idaho (2-1/0-0 BSC) managed to break into the scoring column less than two minutes into the second frame thanks to a 6-yard Joshua Wood-to-Ryan Jezioro pass play. The Vandals' first touchdown capped a 14-play, 70-yard drive that took nearly eight minutes off the clock.Â
Â
Idaho would tack on a 24-yard Owen Forsman field goal with 17 seconds left in the first half, this after the Vandals missed on two previous field goal tries earlier in the game.
Â
Utah Tech quickly clapped back with a field goal of its own in the waning moments of the stanza. Following a touchback on the ensuing Vandal kickoff, Blazer quarterback
Reggie Graff kick-started the scoring drive with a 23-yard scramble to near midfield.
Â
After a Blazer timeout, Graff hit
Asa Chatman with a quick pass, and the freshman running back rambled 15 yards to Idaho 37.Â
Â
Then with two seconds left on the clock,
Ilya Uvaydov tied a Utah Tech school record with a 55-yard field goal that snuck just over the crossbar, and the Trailblazers found themselves down by seven at the intermission.
Â
Utah Tech went on offense first to begin the second half and ventured 49 yards on 12 plays to the Vandal 35.Â
However that is where the drive stalled, but the Blazers still managed to come away with points as Uvaydov blasted a 53-yard field goal that pulled his side to within 10-6 with 9:29 to go in the third quarter.
Â
Uvaydov made a little history on that kick as the redshirt junior became the first Trailblazer placekicker to make two 50-plus yard field goals in one game in the program's 20-plus year NCAA era.Â
Â
Unfortunately that would be the last time Utah Tech would score as the Vandals answered with another field goal three-plus minutes later to extend back to a seven-point advantage at 13-6.Â
Â
Idaho then make it a two-score game with 6:27 left in the fourth quarter when after the Vandals converted on a 4
th and 3 at the Blazer 42, Wood found pay dirt two plays later on an 18-yard sweep down the near sideline.
Â
Utah Tech had one more chance to get into the end zone on its next possession, but the Vandal defense came up with only turnover of the game when Aaron Kinsey intercepted a Graff pass at the Idaho 8-yard line.
Â
Idaho ran out the clock from there to end the game.Â
Â
Utah Tech was held to season-lows of 247 yards of total offense and 25:14 in time of possession.Â
Â
Graff led the Blazers with 45 of his team's 98 rush yards on seven carries. Meanwhile, fellow quarterback
Bronson Barben threw for 111 yards on 12-for-20, while Graff completed four passes for 30 yards.Â
Â
On defense, redshirt senior defensive lineman
Moon Ashby racked up a game and career-high 10 total tackles in his return to "The Palouse." Ashby transferred to Utah Tech three years ago after starting his collegiate career at nearby Washington State.Â
Â
Freshman linebacker
Daylen Love also collected a career-best nine tackles, including a tackle for loss, while a trio of defenders –
Justin Houston,
Brevin Czosnyka and
Logan Pili each tallied seven total tackles apiece.Â
Â
Linebacker
Will Alovao accounted for 2.5 of Utah Tech's three total TFLs, including the lone quarterback sack of the day for either side.Â
Idaho finished with 405 total yards, with Wood accounting for 119 of those yards in the air and another 85 yards on the ground, to go with his touchdown pass and run.
Â
Utah Tech returns home next Saturday night to host Missouri Valley Football Conference member Northern Iowa in its final non-conference game of the season. Kickoff inside Greater Zion Stadium is set for 6 p.m. (MT).Â
