(St. George, Utah. - Aug. 17, 2025) – Utah Tech women's soccer picked up its first win of the season, downing UC Riverside, 2-0, on Sunday night at Greater Zion Stadium. The Trailblazers tallied their first clean sheet of the season, and freshman forward
Jocelyn Wright scored her first collegiate goal in the victory.
UT (1-1-0, 0-0-0 WAC) started off strong from the opening kickoff, building to its first shot by senior forward
Tessa Thornton in the second minute.
In the seventh minute, Thornton cut inside the box and was jostled by a couple of Highlanders. Sophomore midfielder
Bre Koscielski poked the ball free, passing it to senior midfielder
Kyah Le at the top left of the box. Le took one touch and smashed a cross-net shot to score her first goal of the season and give Utah Tech an early 1-0 lead.
The Trailblazers continued to control the bulk of possession in the first half, but UCR (0-2-0, 0-0-0 Big West) stayed in front of UT, blocking two shots and leading to two misses in the rest of the half.
Defensively, Utah Tech held the Highlanders to one first-half shot.
In the 56th minute, senior forward
Lacy Fox's shot toward the upper right corner was saved by UCR junior goalkeeper Trinity Hale. Less than a minute later, Le had a shot blocked and Kocielski misfired on a third opportunity in the offensive third.
Senior goalkeeper
Brianna Frey earned her lone save of the match in the 60th minute, stopping a long-range blast at her right post. Frey earned her sixth career shutout, first this season, with the effort.
The Trailblazers scored an insurance goal off a set piece in the 72nd minute. On a free kick, Koscielski played the ball to Le, who crossed it to the right post, where Wright headed it past a diving Hale for her first career goal. It was Le's second assist of the season and first multi-point match of the year.
Utah Tech's final shot on goal came from Wright in the 81st minute. Hale protected her left post on a high blast from Wright to prevent a brace.
UT outshot UC Riverside 17-4 in the match, holding a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Highlanders were shown five yellow cards in the match.
The Trailblazers take a quick trip to Sin City on Thursday, Aug. 21, to take on UNLV in Las Vegas, Nevada. Kick off is slated for 6:30 p.m. (MT) at Peter Johann Memorial Field.
