Trailblazers Stymied by Saint Mary's in Sunday's Series Finale

Utah Tech was denied its first series sweep of the 2025 season as the Trailblazers were blanked by visiting Saint Mary's, 8-0, on Sunday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.

The Trailblazer offense was stymied by Gael southpaw Dyland Delvecchio (W, 1-0), who struck nine and limited Utah Tech to just three hits over five innings.

Utah Tech (7-11), which trailed 2-0 heading into the home sixth, looked as if it was poised for a big inning after the Trailblazers loaded the bases with no outs on Gael reliever John Damozonio.

However the SMC hurler turned away the possible Blazer rally with strikeout and a back-breaking 6-4-3 double play to send the game to the seventh.

Saint Mary's (10-7) would break the game open in that seventh frame as the Gaels struck for four runs on the two hits and two free passes, with the big blow coming on a two-run Eddie Madrigal triple.

After SMC tacked on two more insurance runs in the eighth, Utah Tech had one more chance with the bases loaded in its half of the stanza, but again came up empty.

Levi Randall and Petey Soto Jr. each collected two hits as the Trailblazers, who stranded a season-high 14 runners on the base paths, wound up with eight safeties on the day.

Junior righthander Dakoda West (L, 0-3) was saddled with the loss despite striking out four while scattering two runs and six hits over 5.2 solid innings of work.

Utah Tech continues its nine-game homestand with a midweek match-up against another West Coast Conference member in Gonzaga this Tuesday night. First pitch at Bruce Hurst Field is set for 6:05 p.m. (MT).
