Utah Tech rallied for its second walk-off victory on its current homestand as the Trailblazers rallied for a 7-6 victory over Gonzaga on Tuesday night at Bruce Hurst Field.
Â
A Utah Tech (8-11) victory did not look like it was in the offing after Gonzaga touched up Blazer southpaw
Brock Roundy (ND) for four first inning runs.
Â
However Roundy was able to right ship after the rocky start as he limited the Bulldogs (2-12) to just one hit and three total base runners of his next three innings of work.
Â
Meanwhile the Trailblazer offense got going, striking for three two-out runs in the third and later tied the game at 4-4 with another tally in the fourth.
Â
After a two-out
Hunter Katschke walk and
Ryan Kroepel double,
Finnegan Stewart laced his first collegiate triple down the first base line to chase home both base runners. Stewart then scampered home on a wild pitch to make it a 4-3 game after three innings complete.
Â
Utah Tech pulled even in the fourth on a
Levi Randall opposite field single that plated
Aaron Perez, who reached on a lead-off walk.
Â
Gonzaga clapped back with two runs one inning later, only to see the Trailblazers answer with more two-out magic in the sixth, which came on a towering two-run blast off the bat of Stewart over the scoreboard in left center to knot the game at 6-6.
Â
Utah Tech had escaped a bases-loaded jam in the Bulldog sixth, then found itself in another bases loaded situation with no outs in the seventh.
Â
Freshman reliever
Talan Kelly (W, 1-1) was called upon out of the Blazer bullpen and quickly induced an easy 1-2-3 double play. Kelly then got Zags' lead-off hitter Hudson Shupe to look at strike three to end the threat.
Â
Kelly struck out a career-high four over three hitless innings to send the game to the bottom of the ninth, which started with a
Kyle McDaniel lead-off walk.
Â
Andrew Pyle then bunted McDaniel over ahead of
Aaron Perez, who was plunked on a 1-2 pitch.
Â
After Gonzaga went back to its bullpen,
Ethan Royal stepped up and drilled an 0-1 Gabe Brabec pitch over the head of the Bulldog center fielder Sam Stem to bring McDaniel around carrying the winning run.Â
Â
Utah Tech pounded out 10 hits on the night, with four of the Blazers' top five hitters in the line-up each collecting two hits apiece, led by Stewart, who finished with a career-high four RBI.
Royal's game-winning hit also made a winner out of Kelly, who collected his first collegiate pitching victory.Â
Â
Utah Tech wraps up its season-long, nine-game homestand this weekend with a four-game series against Cal State Bakersfield.Â
