Utah Tech closed out the home portion of its 2024-25 regular season slate on the wrong side of a 74-42 loss to WAC-leading Grand Canyon on Senior Night Thursday inside the Burns Arena.
How it happenedÂ
Despite seven first quarter turnovers, the Trailblazers (5-23/1-14 WAC) managed to keep pace with the Lopes in the opening 10 minutes of play.
Â
However that all changed in an instant in the early moments of the second quarter. GCU (28-2/15-0 WAC) scored seven-unanswered points in the first 52 seconds of the frame, which turned a 15-10 Lopes' first-quarter lead into a 22-10 advantage.
Â
GCU led by as many as 20 points with under two minutes to play until halftime, but a
Brie Crittendon free throw and four-straight
Paige Cofer points gave Utah Tech a little bit of life late as the Blazers trimmed the deficit to 37-22 with 35 seconds on the clock.
Â
Grand Canyon quelled the mini Trailblazer run on its final possession with an Alyssa Durazo-Frescas 3-pointer just before the halftime horn as the Lopes retreated to the locker room with a 40-22 cushion.
Â
GCU took command with a 9-0 spurt to open the second half, and held Utah Tech scoreless for the first six-plus minutes of the third quarter. The Trailblazers could not recover from that drought as the Lopes put it on cruise control the rest of way to notch the road win.
