Trailblazers Turned Back in Game Three at Portland on Sunday

Utah Tech could not overcome a pair of big Portland offensive innings in a 10-2 loss in the third game of a four-game road series on Sunday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field.

After falling behind by a run after a two-out error in the home second, Utah Tech (4-8) managed to push across its first tally of the game in the Trailblazer fifth to pull even at 1-1.

Petey Soto Jr. reached on a lead-off bunt single, then was bunted over to second ahead of Ethan He, who doubled down the left field line to chase the Blazer base runner home with the tying.

Despite surrendering that unearned run in the Pilot second, junior righthander Dakoda West (L, 0-2) got off to a good start, striking out three while limiting Portland to only five hits over his first four innings of work.

However Portland (5-6) would change that in its half of the fifth, touching up West for three runs and four hits, with the big blow coming on a two-out, two-run double from Spencer Scott that staked the Pilots to a 4-1 advantage.

Utah Tech got one of those runs back an inning later thanks to a Hunter Katschke pinch hit RBI-single that cut the deficit to 4-2.

That would be as close at the Trailblazers would get as Portland broke the game open in the sixth with four runs off of the Utah Tech bullpen to extend to a commanding 8-2 lead. The Pilots later tacked on two insurance runs after the stretch and cruised from there to earn their second win in the series.

The Trailblazers rapped out eight hits on the day, with catcher Andrew Pyle leading the way with a pair of singles in four at-bats.

Utah Tech will look to salvage a series split as the two teams wrap up their four-game wraparound series on Monday afternoon beginning at 4 p.m. (MT).
