Trailblazers Slug Past CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, 15-8

Naone homered and drove in a career-high five, while Martinez tossed seven solid innings to clinch the series win

Kace Naone homered and drove in a career-high five runs, while Ryan Martinez hurled seven solid innings, as Utah Tech baseball ran its win streak to four-straight on the strength of a 15-8 victory over CSU Bakersfield on Saturday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.

The Trailblazers (11-11) wasted little time staking Martinez to a 2-0 first inning lead. Levi Randall led the home first off with a perfectly placed bunt single down the third base line, while Naone was plunked by CSUB starter Shane McAlinden (L, 1-1) four pitches later.

Kyle McDaniel followed with a sharp single through the right side to bring home Randall with the game's first run and moved Naone to third. Finnegan Stewart would later plate Naone on a ground out to give his pitcher an early two-run advantage.

Meanwhile Martinez (W, 1-0) breezed through his first two innings of work, striking out two while recording four infield outs.

Things did get a little dicey in the CSUB (7-14) third as the Roadrunners took advantage of a one-out Blazer error to plated three unearned runs and wrestle the lead away at 3-2.

However from there it was all Trailblazers, who scored 11-unanswered runs during the middle three innings to race out to a commanding 13-3 cushion.

Utah Tech tallied six of those runs in the fourth, with the big blow coming on a three-run Naone frozen-rope home run over the wall in left. Stewart then followed that up one batter later with a solo blast to left center, which was the freshman's (3) second homer and sixth RBI of the series overall.

The Trailblazers tacked on three more runs in the fifth, thanks in part to a two-out CSUB error and a two-run McDaniel single, and saw their lead swell to double digits with two outs in the sixth after a two-run Ty Johnsen homer to left center.

Martinez bounced back nicely from that rough third inning as he retired 11-straight Roadrunners, including needing only 26 pitches to get through those three middle innings to help get his offense back to the bat rack.

The Blazers cruised on from there to post their second-straight series victory on the homestand.

After coming away with four hard-luck, no-decisions in his first four outings of the season, Utah Tech finally made a winner of its junior righthander. Martinez struck out four and scattered six hits and one earned run (four total) in seven innings complete to pick up his first pitching victory as a Trailblazer.

Naone wound up going 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored to go with his five RBI, while McDaniel went 2-for-4 at the plate with three runs driven in.

Johnsen also enjoyed a breakout day as he was a perfect 3-for-3 with two walks and a career-best four runs scored, as the Trailblazer offense finished with 11 hits on the afternoon.

Utah Tech will close its season-long, nine-game homestand and play for a four-game series sweep in Sunday's finale. First pitch at Bruce Hurst Field will be thrown at 12:05 p.m. (MT).
