Cade Montgomery fired six innings of three-hit shutout baseball to help lead Utah Tech to its third-straight victory in a 6-1 triumph over CSU Bakersfield on Friday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.
Â
Montgomery (W, 4-0) allowed only seven total Roadrunner batters to reach base safely, none of whom advanced past second base, and struck out four in six innings complete en route to his fourth win in five appearances to open his sophomore season.
Â
Meanwhile Montgomery's counterpart, CSUB freshman hurler Ryan King (L, 0-3), was just as dominant as he limited the Trailblazers to only one bunt single and fanned two over his first five innings of work.Â
Â
Utah Tech (10-11) finally broke through with the game's first run when with runners on the corners and two outs in the home sixth,
Ryan Kroepel hit a sharp grounder to CSUB third baseman Noah Alvarez.Â
Â
The Roadrunner infielder came up with the ball cleanly, but his throw sailed wide of the first base bag, which allowed
Kyle McDaniel to score from third base.Â
Â
After Trailblazer reliever
Aaron Morris came on and tossed two scoreless innings, Utah Tech blew the game open with five runs on the home eighth to extend to a 6-0 advantage.
Â
The Trailblazers sent 12 batters to the plate in a frame that featured only two hits, along with four walks and two hit batters, with two of those free passes and one hit batter coming with the bases loaded.Â
Â
CSUB (7-13) would spoil Utah Tech's shutout bid with two outs in the ninth on an Alvarez RBI-single.
Â
Utah Tech wound up with only three hits on the afternoon, with Kroepel and
Finnegan Stewart each collecting one hit and one RBI.Â
The two teams will play game three of their four-game weekend series on Saturday afternoon beginning at 2:05 p.m. (MT).
