(St. George, Utah - Feb. 21, 2025) - The Trailblazers held on for an exciting 6-5 win over UC San Diego on Friday afternoon on day two of the Lyman Classic Tournament hosted at Karl Brooks Field.
Utah Tech (5-8) totaled 13 hits in the contest led by a three-hit performance from
Marisa Rubio, who tallied a double, two singles, an RBI and scored a run.
Cassidy Hornung,
LB Kahahawai-Kekona and
Carly Eldredge, the top three Trailblazers in the lineup, also tallied two hits apiece. Freshman
Jorja Crider hit her second home run of the season with a two-run long ball in the fifth inning.
In the circle,
Riley Price earned her third win of the season tossing five innings allowing five hits, three runs, walked one and struck out two.
Sauren Garton came on for her first save of 2025 throwing the final two innings striking out a pair.
How It Happened
Utah Tech opened the scoring in the first inning with a pair of RBI singles by Rubio and
Kinley Pappas.
UC San Diego (2-9) cut UT's lead in half with a single run in the third, but the Trailblazers quickly responded with a pair of runs in the fourth for a 4-1 lead.
A leadoff single by
Ellie Evans and walk to
Maka Sonognini put a pair of runners on base and after a sacrifice bunt by Hornung, the pair came around to score on an RBI single by Kahahawai-Kekona and a fielder's choice.
Two runs for the Tritons made it 4-3 in favor of Utah Tech and Crider's two-run home run to center field in the fifth extended the Trailblazers lead to 6-3.
Refusing to go away quietly, UCSD answered back with two runs of their own in the sixth off Garton on a solo home run and a sacrifice fly.
Leading 6-5 heading to the seventh, the tying run for UCSD reached base on a single to start the inning, but Garton retired the next three batters to hold on for the close victory.
