(St. George - Oct. 19, 2025) – Two freshmen goals propelled Utah Tech women's soccer past Abilene Christian, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Greater Zion Stadium. With the clean sheet, UT posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since August 2024.Â
The Trailblazers outshot the Wildcats 22-6 with a 10-0 margin in shots on goal. It was the first time Utah Tech held an opponent to zero shots on goal in UT's Division-I era, and the first time since September 2019 when the Trailblazers blanked Black Hills State.
Freshman forward
Jocelyn Wright scored the opening goal in the third minute. Off a pass from senior midfielder
Kyah Le, Wright took a touch past an ACU defender and into the box, where she drilled a right-footer past Wildcat freshman goalkeeper Bella Medrano. Wright's team-leading fifth goal of the season gave Utah Tech (7-5-4, 3-2-2 WAC) an early 1-0 lead.
In the 15th minute, Medrano made back-to-back saves on Trailblazer shots for ACU (5-9-2, 1-3-2 WAC). Sophomore forward
Lexi Nelson put a header on goal off a UT corner kick, which Medrano knocked off target. Freshman defender
Abby Olsen fired a shot from 25 yards out after an initial Wildcat clear, but Medrano stood in the way.
Wright nearly logged a brace on a shot in the 18th minute. Medrano slid to her left to grab the curling chance.
Olsen doubled the UT lead in the 30th minute. Running a give-and-go with redshirt sophomore forward
Lataya Brost, Olsen returned the ball to Brost, who dribbled inside the box and centered it. Olsen flicked a left-footer past Medrano and into the bottom right corner of the goal.Â
It was Olsen's second goal of the season. With two freshmen scores against ACU, Utah Tech increased its conference-leading first-year goal total to nine.
Senior forward
Lacy Fox challenged Medrano right after the whistle, putting a shot on from the right side of the box, but into the hands of the GK in the 47th minute.
Wright tallied her third shot on goal in the 50th minute. Medrano was able to fall on the shot, which had been slowed by a Wildcat defender.
In the 75th minute, junior forward
Ella Rusick dribbled by two Wildcats on a breakaway and put a high shot on goal, but Medrano tipped it over the crossbar. On the succeeding corner kick, junior defender
Michelle Rodriguez sent a header on target, but a Wildcat made a goal-line save by the left post.
Freshman forward
Brooke Hendricks tried to beat Medrano at her near post in the 77th minute, but the goalie parried it out of play.Â
Rusick was inches from scoring in the 86th minute. From the top of the box, her right-footed chance struck the left post.Â
With the help of her defense, senior goalkeeper
Brianna Frey earned her third shutout of the season. She ranks fourth all-time in program history with eight career clean sheets.
UT returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 23, at California Baptist. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. (MT) at CBU Soccer Stadium in Riverside, California.Â
