(San Diego, California - Oct. 18, 2025) – Utah Tech men's soccer came up short at San Diego State, 2-1, on Saturday night at SDSU Sports Deck. It was UT's first loss in WAC play this season, snapping a three-game unbeaten streak.
Junior defender
Cihan Caliskan recorded the first shot on goal for the Trailblazers (3-6-4, 2-1-1 WAC) in the sixth minute. By the left post, Caliskan poked a shot toward goal off a corner kick, but was stopped by Aztec goalkeeper Eddy Vargas.
Freshman GK
Luca Campoli made his first save in the sixth minute, grabbing a header by SDSU (6-7-1, 2-1-1 WAC) sophomore forward Juan Zepeda.
Sophomore
Denilson Velasquez dribbled past a defender in the box and fired a shot on goal, but Vargas made a diving stop in the 19th minute. On the rebound, Caliskan's shot was blocked by an Aztec defender.
In the 56th minute, freshman midfielder
Jacob Cinelli launched a shot on target from 25 yards out, but Vargas made a save with a dive to his left.
Off a corner kick, redshirt junior defender
Tanner Dutra placed a ball on frame, but couldn't get it past an Aztec on the goal line, leading to an SDSU team save in the 57th minute.
San Diego State took a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute. Senior midfielder Lleyton Imparato sent a free kick from midfield into the box, and senior defender Christian Engmann headed it down to senior defender Baptiste Boit. He smashed a right-footer into the bottom right of the net to break the scoreless tie.
Dutra responded for UT in the 72nd minute. Off a Trailblazer corner kick, fifth-year defender
Colby Lee set up Cinelli for a bicycle kick. That went off the head of a Trailblazer to the left side of the penalty area. Dutra pounced on the opportunity with a left-footed goal for his second score of the season.
Redshirt freshman midfielder/defender
Mitch Williams earned his first career assist on the goal.
From the top of the box, junior defender
Miguel Regino hit the right post on a dangerous shot in the 77th minute. Dutra got under the rebound, sending a second-chance shot over the crossbar.
Vargas made his fourth and final save against senior midfielder
Jerod Allen, who put a challenging ball on target in the 82nd minute.
Aztec senior defender Tristan Viviani reclaimed the lead for SDSU in the 89th minute. A long throw-in deflected off a couple of Trailblazers in the box and right to the feet of Viviani, who blasted a left-footed one-timer to the top right corner of the net.
Utah Tech outshot San Diego State 16-12, with a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. The Aztecs committed one more foul, 18-17, and were charged with the only offside call in the match.
The Trailblazers continue their road swing by visiting RV Grand Canyon on Thursday, Oct. 23. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. (MDT) at GCU Stadium, and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.
