Mariana Zurita Berdecio advanced to the semifinal round of the Utah Tech-hosted 2025 WAC Women's Tennis Invitational on Thursday at Trailblazer Tennis Courts. UT went 1-2 on the first day of competition.
As the No. 4 seed, Zurita Berdecio dispatched No. 5 Alice Klinteby of Abilene Christian, 6-1, 6-3. It was Zurita Berdecio's second win at a WAC Invitational, following up a 2024 victory over ACU's Masha Vrsalovic.
Zurita Berdecio will take on Tarleton State's Maria Castano, the No. 1 seed in the invitational, in the semifinal round tomorrow at 9 a.m.
Sophomore
Maya Inouye, the No. 6 seed, came up short in a marathon match against No. 3 Vrsalovic of ACU, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. After a strong opening set, Inouye forced Vrsalovic to win an extra game in the third set. The faceoff lasted nearly three hours.
Inouye will compete in the consolation bracket, challenging No. 7 Tasnime Ahamout of UT Arlington tomorrow at 9 a.m.
In the doubles semifinals, the No. 3 Trailblazers fell to No. 2 Tarleton State, 6-3, 6-3. TSU's Castano and Aya Ishii defeated Zurita Berdecio and Inouye, capping off a 3-0 day for the Texans.
Utah Tech will take on No. 4 UT Arlington in the third-place match tomorrow at 1 p.m.
