Utah Tech wrapped up the 2024 season with a 15-5 home loss to California Baptist on Senior Day Saturday at Bruce Hurst Field. The Trailblazers finished the year with a 14-42 overall record, which included a 10-20 mark in Western Athletic Conference play.
Â
Trailing 2-0 before taking their first swings of the day, the Blazers struck for three first-inning runs to race out to an early lead. Utah Tech rapped out three-straight one out singles, last coming on a
Hank Dodson base hit to center field that plated
Hunter Katschke.
Â
Chase Rodriguez followed with a sharp grounder to Lancer second baseman Connor McGuire, whose throw sailed wide of the second base bag, allowing both
Aaron Perez and Dodson to score on the error.
Â
CBU (34-22/18-12 WAC) wasted little time wrestling the lead away, answering the Trailblazer rally with two runs in the second and another in the fourth to vault back in front a 5-3.
Â
Utah Tech drew to within a run at 5-4 in the home fourth when
Kyle McDaniel singled through the right side to chase in
Jack Walker, who singled to lead off the stanza.
Â
However the Lancers countered with a two-out Nick Dumesnil two-run homer in the sixth to extend their lead to 7-4.
Â
The Trailblazers managed to get one of those runs back in the home sixth when
Blake Borgogno singled in Walker, who just missed his sixth-career home run, but did leg out his third-career triple with one out.Â
Â
That would be as close as Utah Tech would get as CBU scored eight unanswered runs over the final three innings to salt away the regular season-ending series win.Â
Â
Walker, who was playing in his final collegiate game on Saturday, and Katschke each finished with two hits apiece the lead the Utah Tech offense, which tallied nine hits on the day.
Â
Meanwhile Dodson, who broke one school single season record and tied another with his 55
th start of the season, closed out his Trailblazer career with a 1-for-3 day at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.Â
Â
Seniors Borgogno and
Morgan Albrecht each collected hits in their final games, while Rodriguez recorded an RBI in his final start as a Blazer outfielder.Â
Â
In addition, pitchers
Ryan Hardman,
Dylan Gardner,
Carson Angeroth and
Justin Woodbury all made mound appearances in their final games at Utah Tech. In all, 12 seniors were honored in a Senior Day ceremony following the game.Â
