Utah Tech baseball closed its final road series of the 2024 season with an 8-1 loss at Cal Poly on Sunday afternoon at Baggett Stadium.
Â
The Trailblazers looked as if they were going to pick up right where they left off following their game three win on Saturday when
Kyle McDaniel and
Hunter Katschke both reached on infield singles to lead off the game.
Â
However Cal Poly (31-19) Griffin Naess would retire the next three Blazers he faced to end the threat, and set down 13-straight after giving up those two hits. The Mustang righthander went on to limit to Utah Tech to just four hits and struck out seven in seven innings complete.Â
Â
Meanwhile the Mustangs cracked the scoreboard with a single run in the second before erupting for four runs in the fourth, and three more in the fifth, to open up a commanding 8-0 lead.Â
Â
The Trailblazers managed to spoil Cal Poly's shutout bid in the eighth when
Morgan Albrecht laced a two-out double down the third base line to score McDaniel, who doubled to lead off the frame.Â
Â
Utah Tech (13-39) finished with six hits on the day, with McDaniel accounting for two of those safeties as the freshman wound up batting .333 (5-for-15) in the series.
Â
The Trailblazers will put a bow on its 2024 road slate with a Tuesday afternoon match-up at in-state foe Utah. First pitch at Smith's Ballpark in Salt Lake City is set for 4 p.m.
