(St. George, Utah - April 27, 2024) - The Trailblazers continued their hot play on Saturday with a 9-8 win over UT Arlington to complete a sweep of the Mavericks on Senior Day at Karl Brooks Field.
Honoring its five seniors prior to the game,
Tyler Denhart,
Madisen Duryea,
Rachel Campbell,
Oaklee Trapp and
Laura Lockard each played their final home game as a Trailblazer.
Winners of six of the its last seven contests, Utah Tech (19-27, 12-10 WAC) totaled nine hits in the contest led by a 4-for-4 performance from center fielder
LB Kahahawai-Kekona. The sophomore tallied a triple, RBI and matched her career high with three runs scored.
Carly Eldredge added her fourth home run of the season while Lockard scored a pair of runs and added a single and RBI.
In the circle, Denhart made the start lasting 5.1 innings before
Attlyn Johnston came in for the final 1.2 innings to earn her eighth win of the season.
UT Arlington (20-30, 10-12 WAC) got the scoring started right off the bat in the top of the first with a two-run home run.
The Trailblazers answered right back in the bottom of the frame with two runs with Kahahawai-Kekona scoring on a Maverick fielding error and Campbell followed with an RBI single to bring home Lockard tying the game at two apiece.
A four-run second inning for the Blazers pushed their lead to 6-2 with the action starting with a RBI double to center by
Ellie Evans. An RBI single by Kahahawai-Kekona brought home Evans, an RBI single by Lockard and a fielding error by UTA rounded out the scoring.
UT extended its lead to 8-2 with a two-run shot to right field by Eldredge, but the Mavericks refused to go away chipping away at the Blazers lead. A solo home run in the fifth followed by a five-run sixth inning, that saw a pair of home runs, tied the game at 8-8.
The tie was shortlived as a two-out triple by Kahahawai-Kekona down the right field line got the go-ahead run only 60 feet away as a wild pitch allowed Kahahawai-Kekona to come home for a 9-8 lead
Johnston came back out and worked around a leadoff walk to retire the next three Mavericks to complete the victory.
The Trailblazers close out the regular season next weekend at Utah Valley (18-25, 10-9 WAC) on Friday and Saturday.
