Trailblazers fall in heartbreaker to SFA, 4-3

The Trailblazers fell in a heartbreaker, 4-3 to Stephen F. Austin on Sunday afternoon in a WAC contest.

(St. George, Utah - March 24, 2024) - The Trailblazers fell in a heartbreaker, 4-3 to Stephen F. Austin on Sunday afternoon in a WAC contest.

Fighting the elements all day long, the match was delayed for over four hours as the two teams had to relocate from on campus to nearby Pine View Park.

Winning the doubles point, the Trailblazers earned wins at both number two (Ya-Chi Hsu and Ana Gutierrez Sampere) and number three (Olivia Bustos/Adithi Venkatakrishnan) doubles to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

"The team played amazing in the doubles closing out the wins at number two and three doubles!," said head coach Eric Pelton.

Moving on to singles, Bustos earned a win at number six singles, 6-1, 6-2, before the Ladyjacks earned wins at number one, two and five singles for a 3-2 lead.

Coming down to the third and fourth singles, midway through those two matches, the rain started coming down heavier forcing a lengthy delay and a change in venue.

Getting back at it, Rachel Mellor pulled out a 7-5, 7-5 win at number four singles to tie the match at three.

Unfortunately, number three singles went the way of SFA as Mariana Zurita fell 7-6, 7-5.

Utah Tech heads out on the road next week traveling to Tarleton (11-2, 2-0 WAC) on Thursday and Abilene Christian (5-9, 2-0 WAC) on Saturday.
