Trailblazers Power Past Seattle U in Sunday's Finale, 13-4

Hank Dodson pounded out three hits, while Aaron Perez and Petey Soto Jr. each had two hits and three RBI, as Utah Tech picked up its second WAC series victory in as many weeks with a 13-4 triumph at Seattle U on Sunday afternoon at Bannerwood Ballpark.

The Trailblazers (7-17/5-4 WAC) pounced on Seattle U from the onset, striking for six two-out runs over their two offensive frames to bolt out to a commanding lead.

Dodson got his side on the board in the opening frame with his first career triple that chased home Hunter Katschke carrying the game's first run.

Utah Tech broke the game open with five more runs in the second, four of which were scored after a costly Redhawk error extended the inning.

Aaron Perez made it a 4-0 game with a two-run double after the error and he would later score on a Katschke single. Dodson then doubled down the left field line to again bring around Katschke as the Blazers sent nine batters to the plate in the frame.

The early run support bolstered a strong start for junior righthander Dylan Gardner, who retired six of the first seven Redhawks he faced, including three via the strikeout.

However Seattle U (7-15/3-6 WAC) would derail the junior's day in the home third as the first four Redhawks he faced all reached base, and ultimately scored later in the stanza, which cut the Utah Tech lead to 6-4.

Utah Tech managed to get three of those runs back over its next two offensive frame, thanks to two-out wild pitch in the fourth, and a Garrett Cutting infield single with one out in the fifth. Cutting would make it a 9-4 game two batters later when he scampered home on a Perez fly out with the bases loaded.

Seattle U threatened again its half of the fifth with runners at the corners and two outs which brought up catcher Jake Wagoner, who drilled an opposite field shot to right field. However Katschke was able to rob the Redhawk backstop of a homer at the wall and preserve the Blazer lead.

The Trailblazers extended to an 11-4 advantage in the sixth on a Soto Jr. two-run home run, his second of the season. The freshman would later plate Utah Tech's 12th run on a Redhawk throwing error in the eighth, and drive in another run with a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Meanwhile four Blazer relievers combined to strike out 10 and limited the Redhawks to only one hit and four walks over the final 6.1 innings to close out the game. Junior LHP Carston Herman (W, 1-4) fanned three over 2.1 innings of one-hit relief to earn his first decision of the year.

Dodson finished a home run shy of the cycle as he added a seventh-inning single to his ledger on the day. The Trailblazers outhit Seattle U 13-5, with Katschke (2-for-5) and Cutting (2-for-6) joining the multi-hit parade in the win.

Utah Tech will return to the Beehive State and make the four-hour trek north up Interstate-15 for a Tuesday night non-conference game at in-state foe Utah. First pitch at Smith's Ballpark in Salt Lake City is set for 6 p.m.
