(Nacogdoches, Texas - March 23, 2024) - The Trailblazers won a pair of 1-0 shutouts at Stephen F. Austin on Saturday afternoon at SFA Softball Field.
Utah Tech (11-16, 4-1 WAC) broke a scoreless contest in the first game on an RBI single to center field by
Marisa Rubio and used a first-inning score to win another close contest in the second game.
Rubio led the charge with a pair of hits in the first game while game two saw
Laura Lockard tally a single and double.
In the circle,
Attlyn Johnston and
Danyelle Leone each threw a complete game with Johnston tossing a career-high nine strikeouts while Leone only allowed three hits, all singles.
Game One Recap
A scoreless first six innings in the opening game saw the Trailblazers score the game's lone run in the top of the seventh.
After starting pitcher Aydenne Brown exited the game after six innings, the Blazers got to new pitcher Kayla Palomino with singles by
Rachel Campbell and
Gabi Giroux putting runners on first and second for Rubio.
The junior came through with a single to center field driving home pinch-runner
Ellie Evans for a 1-0 lead.
The Ladyjacks were able to get the winning run on base in the bottom of the frame with an error by UT and a single, but Johnston got the final batter to fly out to seal the win.
Game Two Recap
Turning right around in game two,
LB Kahahawai-Kekona led off the top of the first with a walk.
After a sacrifice bunt by
Carly Eldredge moved Kahahawai-Kekona to second, a single by Lockard moved LB to third. Looking to swipe second, Lockard got caught stealing, but her steal attempt allowed the run to score from third to go ahead 1-0.
It was all Leone from there as she held the Ladyjacks to three singles in the game going on to toss the Blazers second straight shutout.
