Carston Herman pitched six solid innings, but the Trailblazers could not get the bats going offensively, as Utah Tech dropped the middle game of its weekend series at Wichita State, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at Eck Stadium.
Â
Utah Tech (1-10) plated the game's first run, and their first run of the series, without benefit of a hit in the second inning as the Trailblazers loaded the bases on a walk, fielder's choice and a hit batter.Â
Â
Connor Tallakson followed with a one-out high chopper on the infield, which allowed
Hank Dodson to scamper home and give the Blazers' the early lead.Â
Â
That served as Utah Tech's best scoring chance of the afternoon as Shocker righthander Daniel Zang (W, 2-0) fired 6.2 innings of no-hit baseball with eight strikeouts.Â
Â
Meanwhile, Herman (L, 0-3) kept the Wichita State bats in check as he struck out four and limited the Shockers to two solo home runs and five total hits in his most effective start of the young season.
Â
The Trailblazers finally managed to get their first, and only, hit of the day with two outs in the eighth when
Petey Soto Jr. lined a shot up the middle to bring up
Aaron Perez representing the potential go-ahead run.
Â
However WSU reliever Hunter Holmes would come on out of the bullpen and get Perez to fly out deep to right field to preserve the Shockers' one-run lead.Â
Â
Wichita State extended its lead to 4-1 in the home eighth thanks to a two-run Derek Williams Shocker homer, and closer Nate Adler (S, 3) retired the Blazers in order in the ninth to end the game.Â
Â
Utah Tech will look to salvage the final game of the three-game set on Sunday beginning 1 p.m. (CT).Â
