Utah Tech dropped the middle game of its three-game WAC series to Sacramento State by a 9-4 count on Saturday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.
The game looked as if it would be a carbon copy of Friday's series opener, at least in the early going, as Sacramento State (8-10/3-2 WAC) managed to again jump out to an early lead.
The Hornets cashed in a pair of lead-off hits for two first-inning runs, then struck for four more runs in the third on five hits and a Trailblazer error en route to a 6-0 advantage.
Utah Tech (4-15/2-3 WAC) got two of those runs back in the home third when one-out walks to
Aaron Perez and
Hunter Katschke turned into runs thanks to a two-out
Hank Dodson double.
The Trailblazers plated two more runs one in the fourth, the first coming on consecutive lead-off doubles from
Blake Borgogno and
Garrett Cutting. Cutting would scamper home two batters later on a Perez two-bagger, which cut the deficit to 6-4.
However that would be as close at Utah Tech would get as three Hornet relievers combined to limit the Trailblazers to three hits from the fifth inning on, while the Blazers stranded seven of the 12 total base runners in the game over that stretch.
Meanwhile Sacramento tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth, and pushed home an unearned run in the ninth for good measure, to earn the win and pull even in the series.
Dodson and Borgogno each went 2-for-5 at the plate with a double to lead Utah Tech, which finished with nine hits on the day.
Utah Tech will look to clinch its first WAC series win of the season in Sunday's finale beginning at 12:05 p.m.
