Trailblazers split Friday doubleheader against Badgers

The Trailblazers are back on the diamond on Sunday facing Utah at noon.

(St. George, Utah - March 1, 2024) - The Utah Tech softball team split a doubleheader against Wisconsin on Friday afternoon to open the Trailblazer Tournament at Karl Brooks Field.

Utah Tech (6-8) won game one, 6-5 on a walk-off single by Laura Lockard before dropping game two, 4-0 to Wisconsin (9-9).

The Trailblazers tallied 10 hits in game one led by a three-hit performance by Lockard and added a two-hit performance from Gabi Giroux along with a solo home run by Rachel Campbell.

Game two saw the Blazers held to three hits getting a base knock by the top three hitters in the lineup with Carly Eldredge recording her second double of the season.

Game One Recap
The Badgers got the opening game scoring started with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first before the Blazers answered back in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly of their own by Campbell.

After two scoreless innings, the Badgers put up a three-run spot in the fifth for a 4-1 lead, but UT answered back with a run in the bottom of the frame on a solo shot down the left field line by Campbell.
 
UW answered back with a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly for a 5-2 lead, but the Blazers responded with two runs scoring on an RBI double by Lockard and an RBI single to center by Giroux to cut the Badgers' lead to 5-4.

Needing a run to tie and two runs to win, Campbell led off the seventh with a hit by pitch which was followed by a single by pinch-hitter Baylee Howley. After back-to-back outs, Oaklee Trapp followed with an RBI single to right-center to drive home Campbell to tie the game and move Sadie Gardner to third base.

Lockard followed lacing a walk-off RBI single to left field to drive home Gardner for the win.

In the circle, Tyler Denhart got the start tossing 4.2 innings before giving way to Sauren Garton who earned her second win of the season throwing the final 2.1 innings allowing a hit and run. 

Game Two Recap
With the Trailblazers playing as the visiting team in the second game, after a scoreless first three innings, the Badgers scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth on a three-run home run by Emmy Wells.

Wisconsin added a sacrifice fly in the fifth by Aiivia Bark for a 4-0 lead before the Trailblazers were sent down in order in the sixth and seventh to close out the game.

LB Kahahawai-Kekona and Trapp added singles to go along with a double by Eldredge while on the pitching side, Attlyn Johnston threw five innings allowing five hits, four runs, three earned and struck out six. Danyelle Leone threw the final inning allowing a hit.

The Trailblazers are back in action on Sunday taking on Utah (8-6) at noon.
