(St. George, Utah – Feb. 23, 2024) - Despite a six-run second inning, the Trailblazer softball team stumbled, 10-9 to Weber State in nine innings on Friday afternoon at Karl Brooks Field.
Utah Tech (4-6), who played its third extra-inning contest in its last four games, totaled 11 hits with four Blazers notching two-hit performances in its second game of the Utah Tech Tournament.
Leading the way was
Carly Eldredge, who smacked a grand slam in the second inning for her third home run of the season.
Oaklee Trapp added a double, RBI and scored a run while
Marisa Rubio tallied a triple, RBI and scored a run.
On the pitching side,
Sauren Garton made the start tossing three innings before giving way to
Tyler Denhart for 1.1 innings.
Attlyn Johnston closed out the game with 4.2 innings limiting Weber State (5-7) to three hits, one unearned run and struck out one.
The Wildcats got the game started with a two-run home run in the first inning. The Trailblazers quickly answered back with a six-run second inning that saw the scoring get started with an RBI single by
Sadie Gardner followed by a bases-loaded walk from
LB Kahahawai-Kekona to tie the game at two.
After a pitching change for the Wildcats, Eldredge belted a grand slam to right-center bouncing off the scoreboard to push the Blazers in front, 6-2.
A five-run fourth inning for WSU pushed the visitors ahead by a run and two more runs came around to score in the fifth for a 9-6 lead for the Wildcats. The Blazers answered back with two runs in the bottom of the frame scoring on an RBI triple by Rubio and an RBI single by
Gabi Giroux.
A two-out RBI double to left-center by Trapp in the sixth locked the game up at nine apiece after a scoreless seventh, the contest went to extra innings.
Holding the Wildcats off the board in the top of the eighth, the Blazers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the frame, but a foul out and ground out ended the threat.
The Wildcats broke through in the ninth inning with a one-out RBI single up the middle as the Blazers got the tying run to third in their frame, but
Rachel Campbell went down on strikes to end the game.
The Trailblazers return to the field on Sunday taking on Utah State (5-5) at 3 p.m.
