Macie Warren led four Trailblazers in double figures with 20 points as Utah Tech women's basketball routed UTRGV, 91-55, on Thursday afternoon inside the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Â
The Trailblazers pushed their win streak to three-straight and moved to 12-9 overall, 6-4 in Western Athletic Conference play.Â
How it happenedÂ
Behind the early hot shooting of
Maggie McCord, Utah Tech broke an early 9-9 tie with a 12-2 run en route to a 23-16 lead after one quarter of play. McCord accounted for 10 of the Blazers' first 23 points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers.
Â
UTRGV (4-15/3-7 WAC) tried to keep close after the Vaqueros tallied six-straight to make it a one-point game at 23-22 to start the second period.Â
Â
However Utah Tech quelled any hopes of a Vaquero home win as the Blazers rattled off a 16-2 rally to race out to a commanding 39-24 advantage with 3:45 to play in the first half.
Â
Breaunna Gillen, who scored 11 points in the frame, knocked down consecutive 3-pointers as part of a personal 8-0 run to kick-start the run. Meanwhile Warren drained a pair of perimeter jumpers of her own as Utah Tech outscored UTRGV 23-7 over the final eight-plus minutes of the half to take a comfortable 46-29 lead into the halftime break.
Â
The Trailblazers kept that vibe going out of the locker room, opening the second half with a 21-5 spurt to break the game wide open at 67-34 at the 6:30 mark of the third quarter.Â
Â
Utah Tech hit seven of its first eight shots with five more 3-pointers over that three-plus minute span. The Blazers would extend their lead to as many as 40 points in the fourth quarter before settling for the 36-point road victory.Â
