Trailblazers Upend UT Arlington on Saturday, 72-60

Maddie Warren goes for 25 and Breaunna Gillen messed around and got her career triple-double in the win

Maddie Warren scored 19 of her game-high 25 points in the second half, and Breaunna Gillen notched her third career triple-double, to lead Utah Tech to a 72-60 come-from-behind victory at UT Arlington on Saturday afternoon at the College Park Center.

The Trailblazers extended their current win streak to a season-high four games and improved to 13-9 overall, 7-4 in Western Athletic Conference play.

How it happened
Trailing 28-20 heading into the second quarter, Utah Tech turned up the defensive intensity, forcing six UT Arlington (10-11/6-5 WAC) turnovers and holding the Lady Mavs to a 3-of-16 clip from the floor over the next 10 minutes.

In fact, the Trailblazers held UTA scoreless over the final 5:48 of the period, and in the process scored the final eight points to draw even at 34-34 at the halftime break.

Utah Tech kept that momentum going to begin the second half, outscoring UTA 13-4 to race out to a nine-point advantage at 47-38 with just over three minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Maggie McCord got the rally going with a leaner in the paint to give the Blazers their first lead since 2-0 to begin the game. Meanwhile Maddie Warren accounted for eight of those points, including a conventional three-point play and 3-pointer, while Macie Warren knocked down a perimeter jumper of her own.

However the Lady Mavs clapped back, scoring the final 10 points of the frame over those remaining three minutes to wrestle the lead away at 48-47 heading to the fourth quarter.

UTA led by three early in the final stanza, but the guard line of Maddie Warren and Gillen would take over as they combined to score 17 of the Utah Tech's final 23 points.

Warren quickly hit consecutive buckets to give her side the lead back, while Gillen scored on each of Utah Tech's next two trips down the court to extend the Blazer lead to 57-52 with 6:22 to go.

UTA guard Gia Adams countered with a 3-pointer to briefly quell the run, but Calyn Dallas and Warren answered with the perimeter jumpers to push the Utah Tech lead to 63-55.

Warren followed with her fourth made field goal of the frame on the Blazers' ensuing possession, and after two Gillen free throws, Utah Tech had seen its cushion swell to 12 points at 67-55 with three minutes remaining.

The Lady Mavs would trim their deficit to seven with under two minutes left, but Macie Warren quelled any hope of a UTA rally with a straight-away dagger 3-pointer with 54 second on the clock to salt away the Trailblazers' Texas road sweep.

Utah Tech played arguably its best 10 minutes of basketball of the entire season during that fourth quarter, during which the Trailblazers knocked down nine of their 11 shot attempts, including all three 3-pointer shots, and went 4-of-4 at the foul line.

Meanwhile the Blazer defense locked down the Lady Mavs again, limiting UTA to just 4-of-21 from the floor with three blocked shots.

Numbers to know
Maddie Warren went 10-of-15 from the floor and tallied eight rebounds, one assist and one steal on the afternoon. Warren's 25 points were two off of her career high of 27 she set one week earlier in the Blazers' home win over Tarleton (1/27).

Gillen finished with 14 points along with 10 rebounds and a game and season-high 11 assists en route to her second triple-double of the season, and her first career road triple-double. Gillen also had messed around and got a triple-double in the Trailblazers' home win over Oregon back on Dec. 19, against which she went for 17 points, 10 boards and 10 dimes.

Macie Warren added 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting with four caroms and a career-high three blocked shots, all three of which came in Utah Tech's decisive fourth quarter.

Dallas, who was playing in her fourth game back in her home state of Texas, poured in 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting with three 3-pointers and four rebounds in her eighth start of the season.

Bolstered by their red-hot fourth quarter, the Trailblazers shot 45.9 percent (28-of-61) for the game, which included a 7-of-24 (.292) clip from the perimeter. Utah Tech also went 9-of-10 (.900) at the foul line and recorded 16 assists on its 28 made field goals with only nine turnovers.

Avery Brittingham led the Lady Mavs with 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Adams chipped in 12 points. UTA was held to 31.6 shooting (24-of-76) and was just 6-of-24 (.250) from beyond the arc.
