'Utah Tech head baseball coach
Chris Pfatenhauer has announced the signing of two prep outfielders,
Mays Madsen from Utah's Lehi HS and
Dawson McInelly from Idaho's Sugar-Salem HS,
who both will join the program for the 2026 season.
This may be the most decorated and athletic signing class we have had in my 13 years here," Coach Pfatenhauer noted. "These two student-athletes will be an integral part of our future."
Madsen (5-9; Lehi, Utah) was named the 2024 Utah 6A Player of the Year and state playoff MVP after he led the Pioneers to a state championship. The two-time all-valley and all-region selection batted .443 with 14 extra-base hits, including three home runs, to go with 27 RBI and 38 runs scored as a junior last season.
Madsen also went 3-0 on the mound with four saves and a 0.00 ERA in seven appearances. In addition, Madsen was a two-time, all-region pick in football and earned Region Offensive MVP as a wide receiver this past fall.
"Mays is a fantastic athlete from a tremendous baseball family," Pfatenhauer said. "He can do just about anything on the field; he can run, he hits for average and for power, and he can play three or four different positions on defense, all at a high level.
"We love the fact that he is a football player as well," Pfatenhauer added. "The discipline and type of teammate he is on the football field comes through on the baseball diamond in a big way. Mays will be one of the best athletes that we have had in our program and is destined for a great career as a Trailblazer."
McInelly (6-3; Sugar City, Idaho) earned first all-conference and all-state honors last season in leading the Diggers to 2024 Idaho 3A state title. McInelly hit .361 with seven doubles, four homers, 22 RBI and 35 runs scored.
On the mound, McInelly posted a 3-1 record in eight appearances with two saves and a 1.81 ERA. McInelly is also an all-conference and all-state pick in football and helped lead SSHS to two state championships.
"Dawson is the epitome of an athlete, he is a stalwart on the football field as well as the baseball field," says Pfatenhauer. "He has an above average arm, plus speed, is as strong as most college juniors already, and can play just about anywhere on the diamond. Dawson brings a ton of leadership and toughness to the table and we could not be more excited to have in in the family."
