Trailblazers Drop Regular Season Finale to UT Arlington

Utah Tech will be the No. 4 seed at the WAC Tournament next week facing No. 5 seed California Baptist on Thursday at 3 p.m. MT in Arlington, Texas.

(St. George, Utah - Nov. 16, 2024) - The Trailblazer volleyball team closed out the regular season on Saturday morning falling in straight sets to WAC regular season champion UT Arlington.

Utah Tech (15-11, 9-7 WAC) saw UT Arlington (26-2, 16-0 WAC) take sets, 23-25, 18-25, 21-25 as the Mavericks won their 17th straight match.

The Trailblazers were led in kills by the trio of Kennedi Knudsen, Hannah Howard and Tessa Treanor with seven apiece.

With her fifth kill of the match, Knudsen became Utah Tech's single season program record holder for kills in a season as she finishes the regular season with 379 kills. She passes the previous high mark of 376 kills set by Cami Johnson in 2007.

Sophomore libero Mya Laufiso tallied a team-leading 17 digs while sophomore setter Marley Roe totaled a team-best 17 assists.

An exciting opening set saw an even opening start with the Trailblazers only trailing by one (16-15) after a kill by Nana Asiata. A kill by Howard locked up the set at 21, but three straight points for the Mavs put UTA on the brink of set point. An attack error by the Mavs and a kill by Treanor brought the Blazers within one, but UTA closed out the set with a kill.

The Mavs jumped out to a 15-12 lead in the second set after a kill by Knudsen. A kill by Lusia Langi kept the Blazers within three (19-16), but the Mavs went on a 6-2 run to win the set by seven.

Getting out to a hot start to the third, the Trailblazers led 9-3 after a kill by Casidy Fried. UTA responded with an 8-1 run to take an 11-10 lead and after a tie at 12 thanks to a kill by Treanor, the Mavs led rest of the set to compete their 17th sweep of the season.

UTA led the match in hitting percentage (.242-.162), kills (49-37), service aces (4-2), blocks (9-5) and digs (67-53).

Utah Tech will be the No. 4 seed at the WAC Tournament next week facing No. 5 seed California Baptist on Thursday at 3 p.m. MT in Arlington, Texas at the College Park Center.
