Trailblazers Fall to California Baptist at the WAC Tournament

The Trailblazers finished the season with eight top 10 single season team marks in program history.

(Arlington, Texas - Nov. 21, 2024) - The Trailblazer volleyball team saw the 2024 season come to a close on Thursday afternoon falling in straight sets to No. 5 seed California Baptist at the WAC Tournament hosted at the College Park Center.

Utah Tech (15-12) dropped sets, 23-25, 15-25, 20-25 to California Baptist (8-21).

The Trailblazers were led in kills for the 24th time this season by First Team All-WAC performer Kennedi Knudsen, who finished with 16 kills to go along with nine digs and a block.

Freshman setter Ireland Avalos tallied a double-double finishing with 10 assists and 10 digs while sophomore libero Mya Laufiso added a team-leading 16 digs.

A hard-fought opening set saw neither team jump ahead by many points in the early going. Taking a quick 4-0 lead, the Lancers fought back to take a 12-10 lead and force a Trailblazers timeout.

Out of the break, one kill apiece by Lusia Langi & Casidy Fried and a pair of kills by Knudsen locked up the set at 14.

A kill by Knudsen tied up the set at 19, but a pair of points for the Lancers forced another UT timeout leading 21-19.

Out of the break, a kill by Knudsen, a service ace by Laufiso and another emphatic kill by Knudsen pushed the Trailblazers in the lead, 22-21.

The Lancers answered back with three straight points to put CBU on the brink of set point, but a kill by Fried kept the Trailblazers hopes alive. One final kill by CBU saw the Blazers drop the opening set.

The second set saw the Trailblazers fall behind 6-2, but claw back with a 6-3 run to get within one at 9-8.

A 7-1 run for the Lancers pushed CBU ahead 16-9 and California Baptist closed out the set with nine of the final 15 points for a 10-point set win.

The third set saw the Trailblazers jump out to a 8-7 lead after blocks from Tessa Treanor and Langi. The Lancers answered back with a 9-3 run to take a 16-11 lead.

A kill by Treanor kept the Blazers within three (19-16), but CBU charged ahead by six (24-18) before the Blazers fought off match point for a pair of points before a kill by CBU completed the sweep.

The Lancers led the match in hitting percentage (.297-.197), kills (44-41), service aces (9-2), blocks (6-4), assists (44-38) and digs (62-59).

Utah Tech closes out the season with 15 victories, its most wins since winning 20 matches in 2019, and finished fourth in the WAC for its highest Division I conference finish in program history.
