Trailblazers close out road swing sweeping Texans

Utah Tech has won three straight matches and has totaled eight sweeps this season.

(Stephenville, Texas - Oct. 26, 2024) - Notching their third win in six days, the Trailblazers closed out their road trip to Texas on Saturday afternoon with a sweep over Tarleton State at Wisdom Gym.

Utah Tech (13-7, 7-3 WAC), who also earned wins over Southern Utah on Monday and Abilene Christian on Thursday this week, took sets, 25-19, 25-22, 25-20 over the Texans.

Reaching double figures in kills for the 19th time this season, the Blazers were led in that department by Kennedi Knudsen with 11 while she added eight digs and a pair of blocks in the contest.

Freshman setter Ireland Avalos totaled a season-best 20 assists while sophomore libero Mya Laufiso tallied a team-leading 16 digs.

With the Trailblazers narrowly leading Tarleton State (6-16, 1-8 WAC), 13-12 midway through the opening set, UT went on a 6-1 run to go up six and pushed the lead to  as many as eight (22-14) after a kill by Nana Asiata.

Five straight points for Tarleton brought the home team back within three, but the final three points of the set belonged to the Trailblazers for the six-point set win.

A quick 5-0 run for the Blazers got the second set started on the right foor, but the Texans rallied to take a 15-14 lead.

After a tie at 17, UT ripped off four straight points, including a pair of blocks by Casidy Fried, to jump ahead 21-17. With TSU getting back within a point at 22-21, the Blazers closed out the set with three of the final four points in the set as a kill by Tessa Treanor wrapped up the set.

A back-and-forth third set saw the Trailblazers race out to a 13-9 lead, but the Texans caught back up at 15 apiece.

Continuing to keep pace with each other, a 3-0 run for Tarleton tied the set at 20, but it was all Blazers from there scoring the final five points in the set punctuated by a block by Lusia Langi to clinch the sweep.

As a team, Utah Tech led in hitting percentage (.222-.071) and kills (42-32) with Tarleton holding the advantage in blocks (9.0-8.0) and service aces (5-4).

The Trailblazers return home next week to host Seattle U (5-14, 3-6 WAC) on Thursday night and Utah Valley (15-6, 6-3 WAC) on Saturday for Senior Night at Burns Arena.
