Trailblazers Down Thunderbirds, Earn WAC Tournament Berth

Utah Tech women's soccer clinched a berth in the WAC Tournament with a 4-0 win at Southern Utah on Saturday at Thunderbird Soccer Field. The Trailblazers remain undefeated against the Thunderbirds 3-0-2 all-time.

"Just so proud of the way that we handled the pressure of this game. To be able to put three goals away in the first half is really important in a game like this," Utah Tech head coach Lexi Brown said. "It was really a team win today and the culmination of so many things that we learned over the course of what's kind of been a hard season, but it all came together for a really good performance today."

UT opened the scoring when freshman Adele Faller sent a ball into the box and junior Lacy Fox hit a clean strike past Thunderbird goalkeeper Stacey Barresi to give Utah Tech a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. The score went on to become Fox's sixth career game-winning goal and 16th goal of her career, tying her for seventh all-time in goals in UT history.

From a corner kick, junior Kyah Le played a give-and-go with Faller in the 33rd minute. Le dribbled toward the box and launched a shot into the upper right corner of the goal for the Trailblazer's second goal. It was Le's first career goal and Faller's second assist of the match and fourth of the season.

On another corner kick five minutes later, Le sent a ball into the box where freshman Bre Koscielski put a header in the back of the net to give UT a 3-0 lead in the 38th minute.

The Trailblazers added another insurance goal in the 60th minute when Koscielski nutmegged a SUU defender to set up senior Kalea Woodyatt for a goal. Woodyatt hit the shot off-balance to the left upper 90 and over the diving Barresi.

Utah Tech goalkeeper Brianna Frey racked up eight saves to blank the Thunderbirds, including a strong double save in the 70th minute. Frey recorded her fifth career shutout and third this season with the clean sheet.

"Really proud to have earned that shutout because it didn't come easily," Brown said. "Frey with some big-time saves. Our whole back line, both players that started and subbed in, really earned that for us."

Southern Utah (2-10-3, 0-5-2 WAC) outshot UT 11-9 with an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. Utah Tech (5-6-5, 2-4-1 WAC) committed more fouls, 10-7, and tallied more saves 8-2.

The WAC Tournament begins on Sunday, Nov. 3 in Abilene, Texas. Utah Tech's quarterfinal opponent will be determined with the order of the regular season final standings after the conclusion of tonight's matches.

"We really feel like we're peaking at the right time," Brown said. "That was a really good performance today and we feel really confident going into whoever we're going to face. The teams that we lost to in conference — Every game we lost by one and we were in every game. We step in very confident and knowing our opponents well and just really excited about the trajectory right now."

The Trailblazers will either play at 3 p.m. or 6 p.m. (MT) next Sunday.
