Frey Saves 12 in Loss at Gonzaga

The Salt Lake City, Utah, native is one of two players in program history to make at least 12 saves in a single game.

(Spokane, Wash. – Sept. 3, 2023) Utah Tech women's soccer was in action Sunday afternoon, falling 3-0 to the No. 24 Gonzaga Bulldogs. The result moves the Trailblazers' 2023 record to 2-3-1 with six out of the next seven games set to be played at home.

Sporting the same starting eleven that played against Montana on Thursday, the hosts wasted no time in breaking this game open, scoring just 25 seconds after the game kicked off before adding a second three minutes later.

After surviving the early pressure, McKinley Barney found a look from outside the box and forced a save from the Bulldog 'keeper with a shot in the 23rd minute. Brynlee Rider added another shot on goal in the 35th but Utah Tech was unable to score.

Brianna Frey set a career-best mark for saves with eight in the first half alone; Gonzaga led 2-0 at the break.

Utah Tech created multiple chances in the early portions of the second, with Brynlee Rider appearing to have cut the deficit in half in the game's 50th minute, but she was called offside and the goal was disallowed. Lacy Fox would come within inches of scoring with a 62nd minute shot from outside the box but her attempt was just high.

Gonzaga added a third in the 80th minute as Frey continued to make saves, but it would be the hosts who came out victorious, 3-0.

UT finished the game with eight shots (three on goal), drawing eight fouls and baiting the Bulldog offense into three offside calls. Emily Garbett played all 90 minutes for the first time this season as 17 different Trailblazers appeared in the game.

Frey's career day was one for the record books, as she finished with 12 saves to take sole possession of the second-highest total in a single game in program history. Kayla Thompson holds the record after making 13 saves against Weber State in 2021, and Frey now sits ahead of both Adelle Brown (2019) and Abby Johnson (2012) who previously held the second spot with 10.

Trailblazer women's soccer is back in action next weekend, hosting Northern Arizona (Sept. 8, 5 p.m.) and Portland State (Sept. 10, 12 p.m.).
