Trailblazers top Vandals in four sets

(St. George, Utah – Sept. 15, 2023) - The Utah Tech volleyball team got back on the winning track on Friday night topping the Idaho Vandals in four sets at Burns Arena.

Utah Tech (4-5) took the opening set, 25-15 and the second set, 25-10 before Idaho (1-10) was able to avoid the sweep with a 25-16 win in the third set. The Trailblazers, who picked up their first home victory of the season, closed out the match in the fourth set with a 25-9 triumph.

The Blazers were led by Taylor Snow with 13 kills while Kate Hardy chipped in nine and the trio of Sydney Reese, Taela Laufiso and Kennedi Knudsen each added eight apiece.

An even opening set saw the Trailblazers and Vandals get out to a 10-10 draw. Utah Tech proceeded to go on a 10-3 run to take a 20-13 lead and after a service error by the Blazers, the Trailblazers ended the set on a 5-1 run for the 25-15 win.

A 4-0 run midway through the second set pushed the Blazers in front, 13-6 after a kill from Hannah Howard. Another 4-0 run, this time finished off by a kill by Laufiso, extended Utah Tech's lead to 19-8 and one final 4-0 run closed out the set after a service ace by Knudsen.

After the Vandals staved off a sweep with a 25-16 win the third set, the Blazers closed out the contest with a dominant fourth set racing out to an 8-1 lead before extending it to as many 16 on a pair of occasions going on to win the set by that margin to close out the match.

The Trailblazers held an advantage over the Vandals in kills (53-27), service aces (8-4), digs (65-46) and blocks (10.0-7.0).

Utah Tech closes out the weekend on Saturday afternoon hosting Marshall (7-6) at noon at Burns Arena.
