Utah Tech picked up two more wins on day three of the Trailblazer Softball Invitational on Sunday at Karl Brooks Field. The Trailblazers opened the day with a 2-1 walk-off victory over UNLV, before rallying to rout Idaho State in the nightcap, 15-5.
Â
Trailing 1-0 heading into the home sixth inning vs. UNLV, Utah Tech (12-6) managed to string together a pair of one-out singles ahead of
Oaklee Trapp, who lashed a double to right center to chase home pinch runner
Ellie Evans carrying the tying.
Â
However the Trailblazers could not push across the go-ahead run as the Rebels (13-7) managed to escape the frame with the game knotted at 1-1.
Â
Then after freshman hurler
Sauren Garton (W, 6-1) retired UNLV in order in the seventh,
Shea Clements drilled a two-out double to right center, which scored
Lauren Almeida all the way from first base to end the game.
Â
Garton picked up her second complete game of the weekend as she struck out five and limited UNLV to just one run and four hits over seven innings.Â
Â
Playing as the "visitors" in the nightcap against Idaho State, Utah Tech fell into an early 3-0 hole after the Bengals (6-11) scored two runs in their first swings, and tacked on another run in the second.
Â
From there it was all Trailblazers as they scored two runs in each of their next four innings before erupting for seven runs in the seventh.Â
Â
After Almeida and Clements got UT on the board with RBI singles in third, freshman lead-off hitter
Tanya Windle drilled her first collegiate home run off the top of the scoreboard in right field in the fourth to give the Blazers the lead for good.
Â
Thirteen different Trailblazers recorded at least one hit in the game, including all nine starters, while 10 of those hitters drove in at least one run, with sophomore
Marisa Rubio tying a career high with three RBI to go with two hits.
Â
Sophomore pitcher
Attlyn Johnston (W, 5-2) tied a season high with nine strikeouts and three earned runs (five total) and eight hits over seven innings to earn her fifth win of the year.
Â
Utah Tech will wrap up the tournament with a Monday morning rematch with Idaho State beginning at 11 a.m.
