Trailblazers Fall at UNLV on Tuesday Night

Despite a season-high tying 20 points from Maddie Warren, Utah Tech women's basketball team could not overcome a UNLV perimeter barrage as the Trailblazers suffered their first loss of the 2023-24 season, 100-67, on Tuesday night at the Cox Pavilion.

How it happened
Utah Tech (2-1) matched the Lady Rebels point-for-point in the opening 10 minutes as the two teams saw the lead change hands eight times before settling for a 17-17 tie at quarter's end.

UNLV (3-0) came out on fire to begin the second quarter, hitting four of its six 3-pointers in the frame over the first six minutes to open up a 34-22 lead.

Maddie Warren stopped the run with a lay-up and free throw with 3:19 to play in the half, but the Lady Rebels knocked down two more perimeter jumpers to race out to their biggest lead of the night at 41-27.

However Utah Tech answered with seven unanswered points to end the period and head into the locker room trailing 41-34. Maddie Warren knocked down a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer, which bookended a Breaunna Gillen bucket.

Gillen made it a 9-0 Trailblazer run with a pull-up jumper in the lane to begin the third quarter, but UNLV countered with a 17-6 spurt to open up a 58-45 lead midway through the stanza.

Macie Warren and Maddie Warren combined to score Utah Tech's next five points to trim the deficit to 58-50.

But the Rebels closed the third with a decisive 17-3 run to extend to a commanding 75-53 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. UNLV went 6-of-8 from beyond the arc and outscored Utah Tech 34-19 in the third quarter, and would cruise through the fourth on its way to the home win.

Numbers to know
Maddie Warren scored 20 points for the second-straight game, 13 of which came in the second quarter to help keep the Trailblazers within striking distance. The redshirt sophomore went 6-of-14 from the floor with three 3-pointers, and finished with four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Gillen added 15 points on 7-of-15 shooting to go with team highs of eight rebounds and four assists.

Gillen (1,172) moved into second place on Utah Tech's career points list, and moves to within 41 points of passing former Trailblazer guard Johnna Brown (1,212 pts; 2009-11, 12-13) to become the program's all-time leading scorer.

Utah Tech shot 39.1 percent from the floor (25-of-64), and was 7-of-23 (.304) from the perimeter.

Desi-Rae Young led four Lady Rebels in double figures with 20 points and finished with a game-high 10 rebounds.

UNLV knocked down 16 3-pointers (16-of-33; .485) and finished the night shooting 35-of-72 (.486) overall.

Utah Tech continues its five-game road swing by playing three road matinees over a six-day stretch during the Thanksgiving Holiday week, starting with a date at Texas A&M-Commerce on Monday, Nov. 20, at 1 p.m. (CST).
