Late Trailblazer Rally Falls Just Short in Monday Road Loss at Texas A&M-Commerce

Despite a furious fourth quarter rally, Utah Tech women's basketball dropped its second-straight road game, 84-75, at Texas A&M-Commerce on Monday afternoon at the TAMU-C Field House.

How it happened
Utah Tech (2-2) raced out to a quick 16-5 advantage less than four minutes into the game as the Trailblazers hit five of their first six shots, including four 3-pointers.

TAMU-Commerce (3-2) weathered the early Blazer barrage and countered with a 15-3 run of its own to take its first lead of the day at 20-18 with less than a minute to go in the opening frame.

The Trailblazers were also dealt a big blow late in the Lions' run when leading scorer Breaunna Gillen went down with an apparent leg injury with 1:21 to play in the period.

Macie Warren and Nicole Willardson helped get the 'Blazers off the deck with consecutive 3-pointers to put the Utah Tech back up by four and clung to a slim 24-22 lead at the quarter break.

The lead changed hands three times early in the second quarter, but the Lions would go on to outscore UT 11-2 over the final six-plus minutes of the stanza to take a 44-35 lead into the halftime break.

The Lions led by as many as 12 points in the second half and enjoyed a 69-59 cushion after a Mia Deck 3-pointer with 6:36 remaining in the game.

Utah Tech methodically chipped away at the deficit, beginning with a Warren lay-up and free throw on the Blazers' next trip down the court.

Alyson Deaver would swat away a Lion shot on TAMU-C's ensuing possession, then drew a foul on the other end and hit two free throws to make a 69-64 game with under six minutes to go.

TAMU-C followed with a 3-pointer to push the lead back to eight, but the Trailblazers would go on to score nine of the game's next 11 points to pull to within a single point at 74-73 after a Warren free throw with 1:46 left.

However that would be as close as Utah Tech would get as Lion guard Ahmya Boyce drilled a dagger 3-pointer, while TAMU-C went 7-of-8 at the foul line in the closing seconds to salt away the home victory.

Numbers to know
Maddie Warren led all scorers with a season-high 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including a 5-of-8 clip from the perimeter. It marked the third-straight game overall that the redshirt-sophomore guard has scored at least 20 points.

Maddie Warren also pulled down seven rebounds and picked off a career-high four steals, two of which came in the fourth quarter.

Macie Warren added 15 points to go with six boards, five assists and two blocks in a game-high 38 minutes of action.

Maggie McCord poured in a season-high 14 points, 10 of which came after halftime to help spur on the Trailblazer rally. McCord went 5-of-9 from the floor with three 3-pointers and finished with four rebounds.

Gillen, who sat out the remainder of the game after suffering the injury, was off to a solid start in the first quarter with three points, two assists and two steals.

However the Trailblazers were outrebounded 50-33, which included a lopsided 18-2 count on the offensive glass that led 21 second-chance Lion points (21-0).

Boyce and Mary Delgado led four Lady Rebels in double figures with 19 points apiece, while Deck finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

TAMU-C went 29-of-78 (.372) from the floor, 14-of-32 (.438) from the perimeter.
