Trailblazers Shutout Vaqueros in Road Contest

Utah Tech and UTRGV play to 0-0 draw in Edinburg, Texas.

(Edinburg, Texas – Oct. 8, 2023) Utah Tech women's soccer was in action on Sunday, playing the UTRGV Vaqueros to a 0-0 draw at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. The result pushes UT's unbeaten streak to eight games while also notching the team's second-consecutive clean sheet.

Sporting the same starting lineup that defeated SFA 3-0 on Thursday, Utah Tech found an early look off the foot of Brynlee Rider that missed high in the 2nd minute. The Vaqueros would counter with three attempts in the next 15 minutes, by Bryanna Hofheins came up with her first save of the game to keep things level.

Ella Rusick looked close to scoring in the 19th minute but her attempt would go wide to the goalkeeper's left as neither team would find a breakthrough in the opening 45 minutes, taking a 0-0 score into the halftime break.

Both teams continued to find looks in the second half but it would take until the final 15 minutes for either side to find a shot on goal, with the Vaqueros forcing Bryanna Hofheins to make a jumping save to keep the UTRGV shot out of the net.

Rider looked like she would level the game in its final minutes, finding space near the penalty spot and placing a shot low, but UTRGV's goalkeeper came up with a big save to keep the game level at zero. Neither squad would find a breakthrough as it finished as a scoreless draw.

Utah Tech held an 11-6 advantage in shots and took nine corner kicks to the Vaqueros' four, drawing six fouls in the process. Tessa Thornton played all 90 minutes and tied for the team-lead with two shots as Hofheins finished with two saves to complete her second clean sheet in as many games.

Hofheins, Thornton, Ella Carmody and Gracie Knutzen played the full 90 minutes.

Utah Tech returns to action next weekend, hosting Tarleton State and Abilene Christian at Greater Zion Stadium.
