Trailblazers Concede Late in Loss to CBU

UT returns to action Thursday, hosting Seattle U.

(Riverside, Calif. – Oct. 22, 2023) Utah Tech men's soccer played Sunday night, conceding late to fall 2-0 to the California Baptist Lancers. The result moves Utah Tech's record to 8-7 (4-3 WAC) with one final regular season matchup scheduled for Thursday night.

Bryce Backlund returned to the starting eleven for his third start of the year as the first 45 minutes proved to be a balanced affair. Damian Arguello forced the game's first save in the 10th minute before Stockton Short was called into action for his first stop of the night with an 11th save just 60 seconds later.

Austin Wallace and AJ Ciampini would put shots on goal later in the half but neither found the back of the net, as both teams finished with five shots apiece in a scoreless first 45 minutes.

Both teams would find looks in early parts of the second half. After Jerod Allen had a header go off target in the 55th, Short made a highlight-reel effort in the 61st minute, making an acrobatic stop on a shot off a direct free kick for his first save of the second half.

Though Utah Tech found some opportunities down the stretch, the CBU ramped up its pressure and out-shot Utah Tech 8-3 over a 35-minute stretch that culminated in the Lancers finding a breakthrough with a goal in the 81st minute.

Damian Arguello came close to leveling things in the 85th minute but his header went high and out for a California Baptist goal kick. The Lancers then added an insurance goal in the 90th minute to claim the 2-0 victory.

Utah Tech finished with nine shots, five of which were on goal, while taking two corner kicks and drawing 14 Lancer fouls. Short would finish the game by tying his career-best mark for saves, making seven, while Short, Ciampini, Julian Herrera, Angel Saldana and Abigay Gomez went the full 90; Austin Wallace and Oliver Stone both played 59 minutes off the Trailblazer bench.

Trailblazer men's soccer returns to action Thursday night, hosting a Seattle U program that is currently ranked in the top-25.
