UT Men's Soccer Falls at Home

Carlos Vargas scored his first goal of the season; Trailblazers still in contention for the WAC Tournament.

(St. George, Utah – Oct. 26, 2023) Utah Tech men's soccer played Thursday night, falling 7-1 to the Seattle University Redhawks at Greater Zion Stadium. With the result, Utah Tech moves to 8-8 on the season with the possibility remaining of a WAC Tournament berth.

Traedon Chamberlain made his first start of the 2023 season as Seattle U found early goals in the 17th and 26th minutes. The Trailblazers looked close to leveling in the 40th minute when Austin Wallace found a channel between the Redhawk defenders, but his shot attempt was poked just wide.

Abigay Gomez would force a save in the 45th minute as SU led 2-0 at the break.

Cuba Grant subbed on at halftime as the visitors would double their lead early in the second half with goals in the 48th and 52nd minutes. Jerod Allen nearly cut into the lead off a 51st minute corner kick, but his headed attempt went wide right.

Seatte U scored two more in the 83rd and 84th minutes, with the Trailblazers finding a breakthrough soon after.

Just 21 seconds after checking into the game, with his first touch, nonetheless, Carlos Vargas fired a shot into the far post in the 85th minute off an Ethan Bell feed to score his first goal of the season on senior night. Vargas is now up to two goals across 14 appearances as a Trailblazer.

SU found one more goal in the 87th minute as the game went final in favor of the Redhawks, who clinched the regular season title with the victory.

The Trailblazers finished this game with six shots (two on goal), taking three corner kicks and drawing nine Seattle U fouls. 21 Trailblazers featured in the game as Chamberlain and Julian Herrera would play the full 90 minutes in their final games at Greater Zion Stadium; Grant finished with two saves.

Utah Tech's path to the WAC Tournament, set to be held in Las Vegas, Nev., now lays in the hands of the conference's other teams.
